A self inflicted wound…they never should have attempted to take it.
Sore losers
Well maybe you all need to learn to move on and accept the the Falkland islanders do not want you. It makes no difference to the average Argentinian whether you have sovereignty over the islands or not. And please stop talking about colonialism unless you plan to move back to Spain.
Most of what he said isn’t too bad really, just articulating the reality of the situation there. It’s just this:
> “I am completely sure that the new generation [do not] have any idea regarding the war or that Britain has a beef with Argentina regarding the South Atlantic,” Mr Figueroa said.
Is a bit off. We don’t have ‘beef’ with Argentina anymore.
Argentina seems to want to position this as an open question with both sides needing to come to an agreement. It’s not. The situation is settled as far as we’re concerned.
In 2013 a vote was held in the Falkland Islands with the following question: “Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom?”
The results:
Yes: 99.8%
No: 0.2%
As far as I’m concerned that was a pretty concise way to end the discussion.
If you want the Tories out at the next election, the Argentinians need to calm down and drop it. The Falklands war won Thatcher the 1983 election.
Argentina never owned the falklands.
Ah is it election time already in Argentina? Like seeing snowdrops being the first sign of spring, Argentina bringing up the war and/or the Falklands is a sure sign that Argentinian Elections are on the way
I wish we would all just move on. The Falklands are British. Argentina doesn’t have a claim on them, certainly not just because they’re closer to Argentina than Britain. There was a lot of death and heartbreak which was unnecessary.
Probably not as much of an open wounded caused by the Argentinian invasion in the 1980’s though.
The West Falklands should be grateful we didn’t finish the job and take over completely.
The Falklands were British before Argentina even existed as a country.
What Argentina doesn’t understand is that it never, not once, ever held sovereignty over the islands.
It based its claim on “Everything that was Spanish in South America is ours now”. No, seriously, that’s it. Argentina has just as strong a claim to Montevideo and Soriano in Uruguay.
Also, you picked an island fight with a fucking blue water nuclear power. What did you think was going to happen?
Good, don’t force us to throw salt on it then rather have peace.
Maybe, just maybe Argentina shouldn’t have decided to attack another territory to serve as a distraction of its own incompetence, civil unrest and recession in Argentina.
Maybe Argentina should’ve just addressed its own economy instead.
Dont’ start nothin’, ain’t gonna be nothin’! Y’all learned the hard way.
And who fault is that? They started it in an attempt to show strength. If they hadn’t have done then its possible they might have managed to get some joint sovereignty by now.
Good. Hope it hurts.
>”I am completely sure that the new generation [do not] have any idea regarding the war or that Britain has a beef with Argentina regarding the South Atlantic,” Mr Figueroa said.
That’s not true. How can the new generation not have any idea regarding the war when Argentina don’t stop bringing it up every 20 minutes?
It makes no sense. You take over the islands and then what? Put everyone in an internment camp? You don’t understand self determination ffs.
Some Argentinian academics actually get it:
“I don’t see how our country can impose on a group of 3,000 people, whose ancestors arrived there 180 years ago, a government, a sovereignty and a citizenship they do not want,”
Does it? I have Argentine friends, in Argentina, and it’s never been mentioned.
The only time I hear of it, is when there’s an election coming up in Argentina.
I stuck my hand in the fire and I am upset it got burnt….is that how this works
Please correct me if I’m working but as I understand it Britain and Argentina were in negotiations to exchange power before the 1982 invasion. Seems said invasion backfired a bit.
I’m not very familiar with the topic but Top Gear in Argentina was hilarious. Mad over a licence plate lol
Self-inflicted bullet-hole in foot remains “an open wound” in Argentina, says ambassador.
You know Argentina’s periodic economic crisis is happening when the government tries to deflect by talking about the Falklands
Oh for goodness’ sake. This guy needs to stop throwing tantrums about this. They started a totally unprovoked, unjustified war of aggression, they lost. Get over it.
That sounds like an Argentina problem, not a UK one.
Presumably, the Argentine government is currently struggling? Whenever they start becoming too unpopular, they try to play the Malvinas card – it’s extremely predictable and tedious.
If you keep picking scabs… They will never heal. Time to leave it alone, and get over it.
Ah, Argentinian president having a shit time at the moment then?
I find the harping on from Argentina tiresome. They saw an opportunity in the 80s of potentially seizing the Falklands from us, they failed. There’s no longer an opportunity, move on.
Should be discussing partnership potentials such as tourism, fisheries, energy and other collaborative projects which could happen if they wasn’t so single minded.
This is one of the few Britain or Great British things I have any feelings on whatsoever. For whatever reason I do care that the Falkland’s remain in British hands, and that’s despite me not really identifying as British at all. In truth I’m Scottish and mildly in favour of independence.
I’m early 40’s and whilst I don’t remember the war itself I was young enough that it still came up reasonably often in conversation when I was old enough to understand.
I think the main thing was the fact the Argentinians invaded. That just didn’t sit right with me in my young mind. I think I equated it with ‘if you want something take it’. Obviously at that age you are getting told to ‘ask nicely’ ‘play nicely together’ and are encouraged to share and never grab. I didn’t know much about the Empire and all that, but even now, I find it difficult to understand how Argentina rationalised the decision to invade. I also don’t really understand why this continues to be an issue, and why other countries are sympathetic to the Argentinian claim, although potential oil or gas deposits seem to be part of the debate these days.
I suspect other people you might not expect to would have a similar view, although I obviously can’t say that with any certainty.
Beat it Argentina, they’re ours and no amount of whining is going to change that! Wonder if they’ll ever attempt another sketchy invasion?
One wonders how much poking of the open wound would happen if the Falklands wasn’t sitting on top of some very large oil reserves?
Just asking for a cynical friend….! 😁
Argentina need to get over the fact they lost and then leave the Falklanders to live in peace
Falkamds was British before Argentina was Argentina
Cry more
Good. Poke that open wound and remind yourself what happens when you declare an unprovoked war for islands that aren’t yours, with people who don’t want to be ruled by you living there.
This is just madness, the UK literally wanted to hand sovereignty to Argentina decades ago yet the natives voted against it, but their government are still bitching about it?!
What I find particularly fucked up is the Argentine government “does not recognise the Falkland Islanders as a partner in negotiations.”. Imagine that being told you have no say in your own home. What’s the end game? Kick them all out into the sea?
Irrespective of your political position given the generations of heritage the Falklanders have – maybe it’s up to them to decide what’s best for them
tough titty, they lost the chance of a political route when they used force
Indigenous people of Argentina want their lands back as well.
They’ve been ours since before Argentina existed as a nation, and they’ll continue to be ours whenever the people there have had enough of their incompetent authoritarian government and war makes them as a nation cease to be, too.
Seethe and cope, Argies. Seethe and cope.
“I know a fascist when I see one” – Michael Foot on the Argentine invasion of the Falklands.
The Argentines fucked about.. They where then found out to be lacking. Its a self inflicted wound as far as I’m concerned.
“he wants to re-engage with the UK government to discuss sovereignty.”
It’s nothing to do with either government. it’s the exclusive decision of the Falklands people, through their democratically elected representatives. The Argentinian government refuses to acknowledge this as they know they are not wanted.
They cannot even get the name right as the Malvinas Islands are part of Chile on the west coast.
they can’t move on, because Galtieri sent conscripts in plimsols, to fight the SAS and gurkhas
it was as much to do with the murderous military dictatorship regime as thatcher sinking the belgrano
and it was a savage war
Damn, this was 40 years ago. 40 years before that the world was in the middle of World War 2. Give it a rest. There has been a vote held, there has been a war fought, and at this point everything that needs to be said has been said.
I’m an Argentinian living in Argentina. This topic has been relevant because over 90% of nationals (pulled that out of my ass but ir’s likely true) believe the islands belong to us. I don’t, and I know *one* friend who has doubts.
It is an important issue here and sadly will be for a long time as it creates national unity. All sides of politics come to an agreement on this particular issue. There’s been a shit ton of graffitti and artwork on walls, trains, buses regarding the 40th anniversary.
As it creates national unity, *ANY* dissenting voice gets immediately labeled as a traitor to the fatherland by all sides and shut down. So those who think like me can’t particularly have a free say in this. A new alternative way of viewing the islands is very slowly growing within society, but it will take a lot of years for the general pop to start recognizing the islands as fully British.
If anyone’s for some reason interested in how the issue plays out from this side of the story, feel free to ask
