Next week, the Dutch Foreign Minister David van Veel will visit Brazil, the country leading BRICS in 2025. Discussions during the visit will touch on Russia’s war against Ukraine and other aspects of bilateral cooperation.
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ press service announced this in The Hague.
This will be the first bilateral visit by the Dutch foreign minister to Brazil since 2012. Van Veel will meet with Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, during which the parties will discuss the development of political and economic cooperation, particularly in the areas of defense, trade, human rights, climate, and the fight against organized crime.
Also planned are discussions on geopolitical events, including Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Key Focus Areas of the Visit and Geopolitics
“Brazil is currently chairing BRICS and also maintains contacts with Russia. Therefore it is important to exchange views with Brazil on the ongoing war and on how to put Russia at the negotiating table. It is also useful to discuss with Brazil the recent events between Venezuela and the United States.”
– David van Veel
According to the minister, Brazil is one of the Netherlands’ key partners in Latin America. The country plays an important role in international politics, notably as a member of the G20, BRICS, Mercosur, and remains the Netherlands’ largest trading partner in the region.
“The Netherlands is interested in strengthening and deepening ties with Brazil”
– the minister
Also during the visit, the Dutch foreign minister is to meet with Brazil’s presidential advisor on foreign policy Celso Amorim and with representatives of think tanks regarding Brazil’s role in the world and prospects for cooperation with the Netherlands and the EU.
As part of the visit, discussions are also expected on ways to deepen cooperation between the Netherlands and Brazil and on joint initiatives on the international stage.
