“Surprised” presumably meaning “Now we’re being told the same by someone in our income bracket whom we nominally respect”.
Lewis has an economics degree. Not the same as being a professional economist, but not totally ignorant either.
Since we have reports of lots of people skipping meals already, I think the BoE is more likely to be proved right on this.
“Minister surprised that someone he cannot immediately dismiss has said there is a problem”
His surprise is a bit grim considering how run down Gt. Yarmouth is in places these days.
I don’t understand why the government isn’t investing into scaling indoor farms, they use less water and more efficient !
Funny how some Tory backbenchers are wanting to take away the Bank of England’s independence, when it tells them stuff they don’t want to hear or they fancy a scapegoat.
It would be a fucking disaster if they did. Being under direct political control would bring us the days of boom, bust economics again.
*Reality* has arrived, now what’s his “surprise” going to do?
Imagine if a scientist said “global warming is real”, oh wait..
Get some real life experience into that parliament, I want MP’s who’ve worked in real jobs and got moved up the ladder, due to the knowledge and understanding they have!
Maybe a few *brickies* and *milkmen* who’ve been on the dole to keep ’em in check.
I’m getting so tired and scared of all this, every morning the news talks about the cost of living crisis, how bad it is, interviews someone who can’t afford to eat properly- and then move on to a story about sport just like “oh well, life is terrible but we’re sitting here smiling” and not only is nothing being done about it but the people in charge don’t seem to believe it’s happening?!
Put him on benefits or a low wage of someone who has a masters degree and be wont be surprised for long.
Somewhat surprised. Someone has burst his Westminster bubble. I wish we would all surprise the shit out of them with massed pitchforks in Parliament Square.
When you go hungry, remember those MP’s who told you to ‘buy own/value brands’ looool
Expectations of competency are now so low that ministers can openly admit to being completely ignorant about their jobs and we respond with “oh well at least he didn’t get arrested for breaking his own rules”.
Can we riot yet
India has just banned exports of wheat. Its one of the worlds largest producers. Ukraine obviously is going to have problems with production this year. This means huge price increases on staple foods soon, and mass starvation for people in poor countries. Two consecutive bad harvests worldwide and we really will be in trouble.
Rich people don’t give a damn about you. Rich people don’t give a damn about you.
Minister ain’t noticed yet cuz everything is paid through expenses and has a cushty wage for doing fuck all.
The surprise comes from the word apocalyptic… which is probably a _little_ bit extreme, considering the apocalypse refers to end of the entire world
The government attitude is totally “Oh well, they’ll manage”.
It’s the same through every crisis. While turkeys keep voting for Christmas, why on earth would they change? People voting them in validates this attitude.
It’s pretty crazy how cheap food in the UK is (was), compared to the international average. Other countries tend to compensate though, by having cheaper rent, transportation and energy costs. Obviously these aren’t going to come down so the UK is just going to be stupidly expensive for *everything*.
Yet more BS from those who live on the out of touch gravy train that is UK politics
Can’t wait until it gets cold again, and it turns out that actually, not having Russian gas all over Europe is a *very* bad thing, and BP/Shell CEOs can warm their entire street just from rubbing their hands together in glee…
Ministers surprised that the great unwashed don’t just put food on expenses like they do
I really hate this government. They are so clueless at everything. We would be better off governing ourselves atm.
This year, unless you are Russia wheat is fucked. Climate change to war, has and will decimate crops. It’s almost the staple.
Perhaps now should be a good time to do something about BP and SHELL reporting 2x profits from last year
What we’re seeing now and what we’re going to continue to see as Capitalism continues to decay, is the ring fence around who gets to live a comfortable life get smaller and smaller.
Many people in the global south have never been inside it, but now we’re seeing more and more people in the ‘west’ being pushed outside it for the first time in a long time.
Only one way out but it’s not gonna be easy (hint: it’s gonna take more than voting every 5 years).
“Apocalyptic” was a great word for the headlines, I immediately took notice when I heard it, but I looked up the quotes in context, he wasn’t talking about us. He was talking about the developing world.
“Apocalyptic” isn’t skipping the odd meal, or even eating 1 or 2 meals a day. It’s not eating at all for days on end, it’s every shelf being empty, it’s people fighting and killing each other to get food when deliveries arrive, it’s large numbers of people starving to death.
That’s not happening here and it’s not going to happen here short of a nuclear exchange or some other comparable disaster.

Yeah! Ministers live on another planet indeed
