  1. Parliament votes 188-8 for submission of NATO application.

    6 leftists, 1 Q-Ano and 1 right voted against.

    Leftists:
Katja Hänninen, Veronika Honkasalo, Anna Kontula, Merja Kyllönen, Markus Mustajärvi and Johannes Yrttiaho

    Ano Turtiainen

    Mika Niikko

Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto (Green) says that Finland’s NATO application letter will be signed tonight. The matter is decided at the President’s presentation and then signed by the Foreign Minister.

Haavisto thought that probably tomorrow the Finnish ambassador to NATO would leave a letter to NATO. This is being done together with Sweden.

  2. The Finnish foreign minister Pekka Haavisto (green) made a joke, “I hope it doesn’t get stuck in the mail office” after signing the application letter.

  3. New realities call for new strategies. Finland is an amazing asset for NATO. I feel good knowing that we will have Finland’s back. 🇺🇸🇫🇮

  4. The “nay” votes seems to be left and right populists trying to score some anti-west points. Surprisingly many from the leftist alliance, quite disappointed cause there is absolutely no other reason than scoring some points from the fringes. They would’ve all voted “yes” apart from Ano Turtiainen if it was close vote…. Ano would’ve torched the parliament if that made us closer to Russia..

  5. Assuming we’ll get the membership, I truly hope this will strengthen the diplomatic power against any thread and we don’t need to test any other benefits or obligations from this membership (except intelligence and joint exercise etc).
