One in four people skipping meals over rising cost of living worries, poll for Sky News suggests | UK News

  1. I’m skipping meals and haven’t had my heating on since March. I’ve had no support from the Government as I am a disabled person on PIP. They have hung me out to dry whilst telling me this is my fault for being unable to budget. These tories are monsters, and anybody who supports them is equally disgusting.

  2. I skip meals when it looks like things might get a little low before payday. I’ll skip all the meals I need to so that my son doesn’t need to skip one. It’s manageable for now but not exactly comfortable living and couldn’t be great for physical or mental health in the long run so I really wish the government would pull their fingers out and try to actually help anybody buy their mates and self interests.

  3. I’m reminded of my privilege every day atm. Struggling to work out how many takeaways I can afford after reducing my hours at work and meanwhile these poor sods are skipping entire meals. My heart goes out to them I fucking despise this government .

  4. > “When the meter runs out, I just light a few candles.”

    Candles are hugely expensive, surely.

Can run a LED light for about a quarter of a year for the price of a pack of tealight candles.

    18.9p/KwH quoted by [go compare](https://www.gocompare.com/gas-and-electricity/guide/energy-per-kwh/#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20Department%20for,2021%20was%2018.9p%2FkWh.)

    Standard LED lighting is about 6-9w for a “60w equivelant”;

Even at 9w that’s only 78KwH / y even if it’s switched on 24/7 which is about 15 quid for the whole year.

[a 50 pack of tealight candles costs £5.95](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zan-Village-Homeware-Candles-Tealights/dp/B08KDB6X6K/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=4DTOFD3XF2UJ&keywords=tealight+candles&qid=1652780089&sprefix=tealight+candle,aps,86&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1) and if used the same amount will run out with the same usage in 8 days.

“When the petrol runs out I take some acid and redbull and run the rest of the way”

  5. I’m not struggling, but I’ve definitely given up on eating out or getting takeaway, in order to save a little more.

Can’t be great for the economy.

  6. Oh but that’s because the tories think you peasants can’t cook and spend all your money on iPhones and netflix.. “maybe you should get a better job”

*maybe you should all resign you useless tossers*

  7. Considering we are probably the fattest country in Europe, this typical sensationalistic, bullshit news, from the woke, pro neo liberal media, doth butter no parsnips here pal.

  8. And that’s today when its warm and people don’t need the heating on much or at all. Wait till October when prices increase again just before Winter.

Not only that but GAS went up 54% to the consumer but since Feb 2022, wholesale price decreased by 96% so we’re being charged more than ever when their paying less

  9. I’m sure having a quarter of the population starving is completely fine and definitely won’t impact anything. I’m heartbroken. This is all horrendous.

  10. What the hell is going on in England. Is it 1946?

    J.H.C.

Please, tell us in a concise neutral political manner, how the heck, an entire country committed suicide?

  11. I remember when I didn’t know what a food bank was. It can be better, I know it can, I lived it, it’s not a mythical, impossible idea

  12. I’ll add my name to the growing list here of people on one meal a day. I’m so fed up of pasta and rice but it’s cheap.

  13. I’ve switched off heating and put my water on just 3 days a week now. I eat one meal a day.

My stupid electricity bill for a 1-bed TINY house is over £400 a month (no gas supply where I live). It will be worse when my Bulb contract ends. Best of it is: I’m not poor – I have a great job but I live alone so there’s only one income. This government is deluded in thinking “it’s only the very poor – and hell they’re poor anyway” (that seems to be their mentality).

I can’t afford the likelihood that my fuel will be in the ballpark of £7-8000 a year by October.

  14. Caloric restriction and intermittent fasting is one of the best things you can do for longevity.
All jokes aside this situation is getting serious but I am concerned that the level fear being projected by the media is only going to worsen the situation.

  15. Skipping meals is genuinely very good for your health. People who lived through the Great Depression in the US literally ended up living 10 years longer on average. It’s widely understood to be because of the body’s reaction to the shortage of food. Many more recent studies have come to the same conclusion. We could honestly do with eating less as a whole. However, these fucking energy prices are utterly infuriating. Tory bastards helping their chums out again. Arrrggghhhhh

  16. I honestly just stopped in from my perch in the US to see how “sovereignty” was treating you all. Then, however, I noticed a dozen comments saying “people are too fat anyway, so missing some meals is a good thing.”

What kind of monstrous place has the UK become? I can’t believe I considered accepting a job there only 6 years ago. It’s absolute madness!

  17. I feel a lot of people don’t realise the inequality in wealth in the UK. Not just talking about millionaires etc but between middle class/upper middle class and the working class.

Over the last several months have been working around the country and living in hotels. Average price for a room in the one’s I’ve stayed in is between 79-149 per night and they often book up quickly for at least 4 days of the week.

The car parks are usually filled with cars post 2015.

The restaurant prices can easily range from a £10 breakfast per head to £25 for a meal. Again they’re often heaving.

Going off on visits, I can be booked in an area where the difference in house prices can be around 200k just a few streets/blocks away.

    There are countless examples.
