I know a lot of cynics would dismiss this because Trump and his admin are clearly angling for authoritarianism but its worth noting authoritarians often need mandates from the people to do what they do in some cases more than democratically elected leaders. You need consent from people to be a dictator. If you don’t have that and you push you could easily end up getting chased out of your country with pitchforks and torches.

    Its why authoritarians like Putin spend so much on propaganda. If he didn’t feel he needed to care what the people think he wouldn’t be doing that.

Military leadership is being purged to only have the faithful in place. Voting systems are already compromised if we even get midterms. Most of the media is bought and paid for.
