So I checked the website of Gosc Niedzielny, the most-popular Catholic weekly magazine in Poland. There’s not a single mention of that pope Francis said.
Frankly, I was expecting that. The people who don’t go to church (younger, with access to the internet) will learn about his words and become more sure they’ve made the right decision. The people who go to church (older, who usually only read Catholic magazines and watch state TV) will never learn about it.
This is misreporting. His statement *never* said NATO provoked the war.
Welp – I remember from history how one of the Popes in the 19th century was ordering Poles to end fighting for independence and be loyal to the Russian Tzar…
I am not religious so I judge this purely from political pov: to use an euphemism, not his best take. I don’t think he’s bad in regard to other topics but this is just a terrible opinion about a conflict that has a clear unprovoked aggressor and an innocent defender.
The verbal bitchslapping of the Russian patriarch was funny and appreciated though, the top Russian hierarchs are just frocked Lavrovs at this point.

He said “it might be,.he doesn’t really know, perhaps it was facilitead by west’s attitude” which isn’t the best take but I think his other quote is worse, he said that conflict in Ukraine has started because of some external factors. He’s shifting blame from Russian command to some “external factors” and while first was misinformed, this is straight up wrong to do. Unless he knows something lol
Who cares. Pope is nothing else than a pseudo-political marionette, carefully utilized to get as much monetary benefit to a Catholic Church as possible.
Church is largely driven by politics and power and, maybe, just maybe, is trying a give and take approach.
But don’t quote me on any of it, I’ve stayed away from any organized religion for over a decade now and would not even think about coming back/re-joining the church.

Well you need to understand that in Poland there is only one pope, and he is already a saint. Even (especially?) the church in Poland does not respect new popes.

Eh do you think this is first time in history that pope said something like that? Check what pope dared to say during our fights for independence in 19th century or during WW2. Basically the message was “shut the fuck up Poland and do as you’re told – give up”. So seriously I’d really be surprised if pope actually said something meaningful.
There’s also theory that this mf cares more about businesses than actual morality and because in Europe more people decides to leave church he fights for his clientele in South America and Africa, but there Ukraine = West = NATO = this bloody USA so he can’t openly support them :’) fuck organized religious world wide corporations

Some NATO countries provoked the war in the sense like buying resources from Russia, which was a hostile country to western values and geopolitically, that’s why Putin had the sufficient economy to afford all the invasions of the last years in the first place.
The naivety was definitely a bad decision, some countries under their current leaderships like Russia or Iran don’t belong into developed society and should be banned from most things, and the “let’s be nice with Russia” politics was also a complete failure. Add some back and forth with Ukraine like giving the impression they could join eu or nato, overall not the best approach.
Many polish catholics didn’t like current pope before and they surely don’t like him now.
In Poland we have got Ojciec Tadeusz Rydzyk in charge of Roman Catholic Church.
