Following widespread backlash over setlist repetition at Tool Live in the Sand (to the point of a class-action lawsuit), the iconic prog-metal band broke open its songbook over the weekend in New Zealand. For the kickoff to an international tour, Tool busted out four songs not played in over 20 years.
The tour started on Saturday with the first of two shows at Spark Arena in Auckland, NZ. After regular heavy-hitters “The Grudge” and “Fear Inoculum” got the show going, Tool reached back 10,000 Days (well, technically only 5,952 days) for its first performance of “Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann)” since August 7th, 2009, per Setlist.fm.
Maynard James Keenan, Danny Carey, Adam Jones, and Justin Chancellor only went deeper from there, later bringing back Lateralus‘ “Disposition” and immediately following it with Ænima‘s “H.” Neither song had been seen since 2002, last appearing within a week of each other on November 24th and 18th, respectively. Even after “H.” had been gone 23 years, the arena full of fans didn’t miss a cue as they sang along, “I don’t mind” a cappella with Maynard.
Tool still had one more surprise during the encore, performing its second-ever cover of Black Sabbath‘s “Hand of Doom”, a cover the band debuted on July 5th at Ozzy Osbourne‘s Back To The Beginning farewell concert in Birmingham, England.
Tool returned to the Spark Arena today, November 23rd (though now it’s tomorrow in New Zealand), and proved Saturday’s setlist experimentation wasn’t a one-off. Though the show started similarly with “Fear Inoculum”, “The Grudge”, “Lost Keys”, and “Rosetta Stoned”, Tool then brought back a pair of 10,000 Days songs back-to-back with “Intension” (LTP 3/27/14) and “Right in Two” (LTP 5/24/22).
The bust-outs kept coming with “Prison Sex”, taken from Tool’s 1993 studio debut, Undertow, and not performed since April 14th, 2002, at the 1,014-capacity Diamond Hall in Nagoya, Japan. Finally, the band started the encore not with a bust-out, but a debut instead, performing “Mockingbeat” live for the first time, more than six years after it came out on 2019’s Fear Inoculum.
The good news is that Tool appears to be (finally) dusting off long-overlooked corners of its extensive catalog. The bad news (for U.S. fans) is that it’s happening on the other side of the world. Tool is in Australia and Asia in November and December, coming to Hawaii on the 19th and 20th, before returning to the mainland to headline Sonic Temple in Columbus, OH, on Sunday, May 17th, 2026.
