The Department of Government Efficiency, often referred to as DOGE, has been disbanded, according to a new report from the Guardian.

DOGE, an initiative once led by Elon Musk, was tasked with slashing federal agency spending. It was dissolved with eight months still remaining on its charter, the outlet reports.

Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management, said that the agency “doesn’t exist,” according to the Guardian.

During 2025, DOGE severely impacted several federal agencies, claiming to have saved billions of dollars in what it called wasteful spending.

DOGE said that the most savings were realized via changes at the U.S. Agency for International Development, accounting for a claimed $6.5 billion in savings.

As the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency fired thousands of federal workers, several states including New York began recruiting those who were let go.

At one point, DOGE attempted to pry into the Internal Revenue Service’s Integrated Data Retrieval System — which can include bank account information tied to IRS accounts.

DOGE also shuttered 47 Social Security Administration field offices nationwide, including 3 in New York.

DOGE’s plan for cuts to the World Trade Center Health Program were quickly reversed after bipartisan pushback from lawmakers.
