Disaster in some areas, pubs are raking it in while blocking up pathways.
Local street is busy but wide so was always comfortable to walk along. Now some of these pubs and restaurants have these blocks outside blocking most of the path meaning a bottle neck which cyclists also have to go through.
There hasn’t been any other sector given the amount of supports the hospitality sector has and still is getting. The number of them going out of business actually fell during covid which tells you what you need to know about the supports.
All this talk of new normal etc yet government aren’t prepared to let non viable businesses die.
Happy for outdoor hospitality to still be a thing, but some premises are very lax on making sure they maintain access on public footpaths. A lot of places leave very little room for anyone passing, if you have a buggy or a few kids with you, or a suitcase, or are in a wheelchair, it can be very difficult to get by, that’s not on. The pubs don’t own the footpaths and there’s no excuse for taking them over now that indoor seating is back to normal.
They really need to fully pedestrianise St William St.
Loved the outdoor dining last year but I basically had to walk on the road with cars because tables were taking up the paths.
