The same people complaining about ‘being made to conform’ are the exact same people who complain that Britain isnt British any more. Things like grade 2 listed buildings exist to keep the traditional architecture and styles. They literally exist to keep Britain British.
Why is the cost of the house relevant? If it’s grade 2 it could be £10000 or 50M the same rule applies – if using cost is a factor here then the price of the painting is most relevant.

Also – can someone not paint their own house however they like? Who cares?

It does look like shit so I think that’s fair enough. There’s nice houses on that road, then you’ve got people with crap taste painting their house the colour of a battleship. Normally I abhor interference like that, but in this case it’s actually good 👍🏻
The woman who was “so upset” at a house being painted grey that she avoided meeting the offending neighbours must be so insufferable. What a thing to be that upset about.

Not going to read the article but I bet their purchase of the property included the proviso that the exterior has to remain the same, or the building is listed or something like that. Hate it when newspapers do this; it’ll be technically correct that the order came after complaints but not because of the complaints.
I think it looks fine with the black paint. It seems ridiculous that the homeowners can be ordered to repaint their house white. It also seems ridiculous that some people are apparently offended about a house being painted black.
