Farmers are staging a go-slow protest on roads across the UK today (Monday), to show their anger at the family farm tax.

The farmers are driving tractors and machinery along key main routes to draw attention to the growing pressures on the agricultural sector, ahead of the Budget on Wednesday.

This footage shows the protest on the A160 in North Lincolnshire.

The protests take place ahead of the Budget, where Chancellor Rachel Reeves plans to introduce a 20 percent rate on agricultural land and businesses worth more than £1 million.

A spokesperson for Farmers To Action said: “We all hope that taking part in the Day of Unity will further bring the farming community together.”

  1. angry wealth hoarders block roads so us working people can’t get to work

  2. Wonder if there be as much outrage as when Just stop oil did it

  3. Farmers pay half the inheritance tax of everyone else, and get 10 years to pay it off.

The *Family Farm Tax* is to stop people like James Dyson hoovering up all the farmland they can so they can abuse it as a tax dodge.

  4. The people of Britain seem to want things without paying for it.

  5. Fuck the farmers. They wanted the UK to exit the EU, and look what happened there.

  6. At what point does this constitute domestic terrorism? Like seriously, we have landed people with multi-million pound estates threatening to collapse the economy because they will have to pay half the rate of IHT the rest of us pay.

  7. They’re just punishing innocent people trying to go to work and doing more harm to their cause than good.
What if someone misses their mums funeral or an ambulance needs to get through.

  8. I understand why the farmers don’t want this, but they should just lump it. Nobody is supporting them. The more they draw attention to themselves, the more everyone will hate them for wanting to pay more than half of everyone else.

  9. Its not a family farm tax. It is inheritence tax that is paid at a beneficial rate in comparison to everybody else that was set up due to the fact that farms were bought up as a way to avoind inheritence tax.

Farmers now have to pay 20% (half the rate everybody else pays) on assets effectively above about 3million and they have about 10years to pay it off where as everybody else has to pay it straight away.

Even with this, if you can afford to buy a farm buy one as they will save you loads in tax and you also can get lots of subsidies and grants allowing farms to be run as the business equivelent of being on benefits.

It is hardly surprising a lot of rich people are against the tax.

  10. Aren’t they amongst the same people who cried that Just Stop Oil did this kind of thing?

  11. That explains why it took 2 hours to do my 45-minute commute.

  12. It when Just stop oil do it it’s an issue? Makes no sense

  13. Literally all they need to do is put in proper succession planning.

Reeks of entitlement to me. On the one hand I get that we should be support the agriculture sector but giving them immunity to IHT while everyone else has to pay seems wholly unfair.

They still get significantly more generous allowances than the rest of us anyway.

Obligatory add – IHT is a voluntary tax. You can choose to be mad at it or you can sort it. Your choice.

  14. Personally I am again this tax, at least when applied to actual farmers (as opposed to people and companies hoovering up farmland for tax avoidance).

I would much rather see protection for the land with local community (of farmers) consent required for any purchases or changes of use.

  15. So short of money they can take their expensive tractors for a drive to hold everyone to ransom because they refuse to accept a legitimate policy of a democratically elected government.

  16. They should just pave over farmland and build housing. We don’t need food anymore. We have supermarkets!

  17. go slow on UK roads?

I’m glad they put out a press release otherwise no one would have noticed

  18. “Angry farmers” – are there any other sort?

  19. I find it difficult to feel sorry for the largely Brexit voting, Tory supporting, animal abusing farmers.

  20. Wow they have been doing this protest around my area for the last 10 years.

  21. Have the farmers been designated as terrorists yet?
Can’t be blocking roads slowing up profitable business.

  22. Bloody hell, yellow vests! Hopefully they follow in the French’s footsteps and burn some speed cameras.

  23. Obviously they should all be arrested and thrown in gaol.

  24. Farmers driving along roads slowly… so no change there then?

  25. Spent a good chunk of my youth in Suffolk

A fair few farmers there are in favour of the changes, why, because it will reduce the cost of farms

Most of them are tenants to people like Andrew Lloyd-Webber and James Dyson who have hoovered up farms to use as an inheritance tax dodge

They hope that if that perverse incentive is removed then they will be able to afford to buy thier own farms, one guy I know has been gazummped 4 times by billionaires in quest to get his own farm, and his parents are fending off constant offers from billionaires to buy their farm at all over market value

This change might actually benefit farmers, and given that it’s half of what anyone else will pay and they get 10 years to pay it, could end up having positive effects

  26. Why the fuck are they inconveniencing ordinary British citizens, shouldn’t they be blockading Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament, I don’t get it ?

  27. As opposed to the rest of the time when they don’t hold up traffic whilst on main roads?

On a serious note, this particular tax can fuck off. Taxing farmers on something they’re likely to hand down, after rinsing them for years and making their lives incredibly difficult is ridiculous.

  28. Farmers: ‘We’re maybe asset rich but we’re cash poor’. I’m on the side of the asset poor, cash poor. Pay your taxes and stop whining.

  29. If you see a field with a pond with a family having a picnic you fill in the pond with concrete, plough the family into the field, blow up the tree and use the leaves to make a dress for your wife, who’s also your brother!

  30. Now let’s see the media react to this, like it was Just Stop Oil doing it.

  31. I’m all for getting rid of that short sighted policy but this is the wrong way to go about it because it will turn a lot of ordinary people against them, just dump shit outside parliament

  32. farming is a carbon nightmare and has no place in a modern progressive society

  33. Why don’t farmers set themselves up as businesses, with themselves and their children as directors. Then pay themselves living costs as a salary from the business, but keep the assets owned by the business.
Then when they die, the other directors just carry on with the business.

  34. Surely they can’t go any slower on the roads than they do already?

  35. They literally dont even know what they are protesting.

    Utter morons.
