Croatia and Australia have signed a major bilateral agreement designed to eliminate double taxation on income and prevent tax evasion and avoidance, marking a significant step forward in economic cooperation between the two nations. The agreement was formally signed in Australia by Croatia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Marko Primorac, and Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers.

The new treaty is expected to strengthen trade, boost investment, and improve business conditions for companies operating between the two countries. It also brings important benefits to Australia’s sizeable Croatian diaspora, making financial and professional activities across borders more straightforward and economically favourable.

During his official visit, Minister Primorac met with South Australia Premier Peter Malinauskas and other senior political and economic representatives. Discussions focused on key areas of collaboration, including strategic investment, innovation, advanced industry, energy, and high-tech development. Particular emphasis was placed on enhancing educational cooperation and deepening economic ties.

Primorac also met with members of Australia’s Croatian community—one of the most active and numerous Croatian diasporas in the world. He thanked them for their long-standing contribution to strengthening cultural and economic connections between the two countries, highlighting the importance of preserving Croatian heritage, language, and traditions abroad. He also encouraged continued diaspora involvement in Croatia’s economic and social initiatives.

On the margins of the official meetings, discussions were held with potential investors about opportunities across a range of economic sectors.

Australian officials and business leaders expressed strong satisfaction with the current partnership and reiterated their readiness to further strengthen strategic cooperation. Minister Primorac emphasised that the newly signed treaty will open fresh opportunities for Croatian businesses, deepen ties between Croatian and Australian commercial sectors, and enable the diaspora to play an even more active role in Croatia’s development.
