Saw this little fella on my way to work last night, first time seeing one in years.

  1. Might be young or too small as I think it really should be hibernating now

  2. Thats great you saw it last night, that’s when hedgehogs are meant to be out ☺️ Having said that, they should be fattening up for hibernation very soon!

I have hogs who visit my garden most nights between March – Mid November, then they disappear into hibernation over winter. I make sure they have plenty of food and water throughout the year, and a house to live in too.

    They’re such cute little critters.

  3. This little guy should be hibernating, anything less than 500 grams won’t survive winter

If you see small hedgehogs out now then please take them to a rescue facility

They are relatively easy to care for if you need too overnight-

A good solid high sided box (they climb really well) with lots of newspaper, water and cat biscuits placed somewhere warm will keep them comfortable

  4. IMO, it does look a bit small and not fattened enough to hibernate. The crease between its head and shoulders shouldn’t really be there, so it may need about another 100g of weight. It looks about 350-450g

OP, if you spot it out in the day, please get it to a local rescuer or vet straight away. It might be dehydrated too because of too many parasites.

  5. Apparently they are in the decline, numbers have dropped by 50% in Scotland alone

  6. We had one visit almost every night for well over a year but randomly around the middle of summer it vanished. Sadly I suspect it either got run over or predated.
