Any cap at all is insane. Ukraine should not be engaging at all in this Russian proposal. Any limits on sovereignty are non starters.
Financially and demographically there is no way they can sustain such a large force without continued support from other countries.
Uk with a population of around 70 million and being much more wealthy have around 100k.

Ukraine’s standing army at the start of 2022 was ~200 000 soldiers.
It’s utterly unfeasible for a country of 28-30 million to sustain anything even *close* to 800 000 in peace time.
So this “compromise” is totally irrelevant not only because the Ukrainian leadership wouldn’t really be giving up anything with this, but also because the whole plan won’t be accepted anyway considering the dynamics of the conflict currently, – a.k.a. Ukraine being on the back foot; pushed back in multiple directions and Russia maintaining the initiative – thus the war will simply move on as before.

Capping is just being stupid. Ukraine could have 1.5 million and what, invade Russia? If there is any sign Russia wants to continue, a capped military is it.
Each one will get a full-sized leopard-tank, a Swedish Gripen or equivalent armament. Maybe it would work.
Putin will likely reject it anyway and Trump will look like a fool, because he is one, and he will put a similar proposal out there in 4-6 months.
Trump is already signaling with 100-foot-high blinking font that America is an unreliable, worthless ally. Europe will do their damnedest to go it alone and disengage from the USA militarily for at least the next 4 years.
Trump can’t be trusted to provide logistics or support for Europe, so that’s the demise of the American military industrial complex. They will have a new stealth fighter and other items in 3+ years, and then they wll never have to buy from America ever again.
Peacetime military. They’re barely over 800,000 now during wartime. This is a purely theoretical limit, a way to continue to (appear to) be engaged in this “peace talks” charade while sacrificing nothing.
But 5 million reservists and militia, 1 million park rangers and 1 million police personnel with and additional 250 000 state security and 500 000 intelligence personnel…a stupid game for political expediency so that Putin can save face
It’s all smoke and mirrors anyway. What will be fascinating is how hard russia collapses due to the fact it didn’t reach any of its stated goals. I’m sure they’ll spin it with propaganda on the great russian victory but as stupid as russians are they will clearly see a prosperous western leaning Ukraine while they don’t have indoor plumbing in most of their country. China will cleave off their eastern territories with economic slavery while the south lands start looking at Turkey and China as well as better partners than moscow. It will very hard to maintain that landmass without the distraction of war. Nevermind the destruction of industry with so many of the brain trust of the country fleeing or dying in the war. Industry that can’t pivot from war economy to peace economy. Foreign investment that is the only lifeline to get back on track will stay far away so as not to be burned again by this kleptocracy.
Russian government only knows how to war and steal. When there’s nothing left to steal…

Hearing the cap on the Ukrainian military or other things imposed on Ukraine, and that trump will claim credit is gut-wrenching, but it us for Ukraine to decide to do what is best here.
Ok so cap the professional military at 800,000 but start mandatory wilderness survival training program for all military age men and women. Add about 200,000 folks on that and teach them how to survive outdoors, fix things, navigate, work as a unit and maybe do some target shooting too. 🤫You know, just good skills as citizens.
Ukraine is dumb if they think Russia will allow them to exist independently.

Russia won’t agree. That’s what they are banking on. So the usa cannot do anything else but support Ukraine, even though they don’t want to.
Then hopefully a new administration comes in somewhere soon that does things differently.

What you’ll find is that Ukraine has been supported by A LOT of volunteers in this war. More so than official government help.
I think it is an act to gain some time. Who is going to count the soldiers? Anyway. This Trump administration is nothing but a puppet regime.

It doesn’t matter TBH. The SVR is going to come up with whatever numbers they want. They’ll just count every fire fighter, policeman, teacher, farmer, physician, and 8-year-old in Ukraine as a soldier until they get 800,000 + 1.
It’s not like they’ve ever had reporting numbers for NATO “invasion forces” anywhere close to accurate. They just take the best number they can think of and multiply it by at least 5. Any term that requires the RF to act is good faith is meaningless.
whatever happens, we can be sure of one thing: russia is fucked, this war fucked they population and economy and china going hard in eletric vehicles and fusion power development means in the future oil will crash, we all know russia is just a big gas station
800k is a reasonable size army for a country the size of Ukraine… and enough to prevent an initial Russian attack. If Russia attacked again they could expand as needed.
Mistake. You are yielding an element of sovereignty. A sovereign country decides what its self defence needs are, not someone else, specially not the neighbouring dictator.

Who is going to monitor them to make sure they don’t go over 800k? Western Troops in Ukraine?
As many point out this is as much a practical limit as it would be a statutory limit. But it makes the Ukrainian side look reasonable and kicks the ball back in Russia’s court.
