  1. Is this for people visiting from within the UK too? If so, it doesn’t feel right that people should have to pay a tax to visit their family and such.

  2. “Supercharge the economy”!

I don’t have a strong opinion on this really. But you can tell we’ve really given up on actual big ideas when this is being sold as a game changer.

  3. Sticking a £1 tourist tax on a night in a hotel makes zero difference to most and would earn nearly £100m a year for London to invest back into making the city more attractive. It’s being done in Scotland and Wales and most other major cities like New York.

It seems an absolute no-brainer to me, especially when the tube and bus network is so badly underfunded and outdated. Who knows, maybe some of that money could be used to tackle the outright fraud and phoenixing we see with the American candy shops and even investigate billionaires like Asif Aziz, who currently seem to have free reign to close down pubs and cinemas with impunity.

  4. “The only things in life that are certain Death and Tax.”

Guess the saying still holds true.

  5. Be interesting to find out how this extra revenue is actually used. Recent track record feels pretty poor in terms of hard choices being avoided outside of populist stuff near election cycle

  6. All of this depends on what the “tourist tax” is, and how it’s applied, and who counts as a tourist and who doesn’t.

  7. Doesn’t really mean anything unless we get total transparency on where the spending goes.

    Which we won’t.

    Bit of a nothing statement.

  8. Most countries do it so i am not against it, but we suouls do so carefully and reasonably

  9. I’m not against this idea however, let’s be real here. More money for the city means more money for consultants, politicians etc, we will see a lot of that money wasted and it will probably not improve London that much.

  10. Get taxed and your phone stolen welcome to London

  11. As a frequent visitor to London I’m all for a tourist tax.

  12. From what I have read, 80% of hotel stays in the UK are by people from the UK. I am guessing this will apply to both domestic and foreign visitors as happens in Scotland. With VAT already added it feels wrong. I’ve seen quotes of £2 but how long before it is £3..4..5 or becomes a percentage.

The government are just getting desperate now and taxing anything they think they can get a little more on. Let’s be honest, if 80% of hotel stays in the UK are UK based guests it is a tax largely on British holidays. If it only applies to people with non UK passports I have no issue.

  13. You would think that they could wait a day until the Chancellor has actually announced a Tourist Tax in Parliament …

  14. All for it and while we’re at it a charge for all the free museums for non UK citizens. Maybe £5 and under 18 free.

  15. A small town I regularly visit in France to see family has a tourist surcharge. It’s a few euros and nobody notices.

It’s long overdue and really a no-brainer for one of the most visited capitals in the world.

  16. A stabbing tax or a phone filching tax would really rake it in.
