2. The problem with catastrophic flu outbreaks is that they don’t stay limited to Russian soldiers.

4. I hope Ukraine can deliver this year’s flu vaccine to as many Ukrainian troops as possible as quickly as possible.

   I know that won’t be easy to do but I hope they can.

   This pattern matches the hypothesised mechanism that helped drive the evolution of the 1918 flu.
   In most outbreaks, strains that spread well tend to become dominant. Strains that kill the host too fast usually lose out, since the host cannot pass them on.

   The trenches in 1918, and Russia’s current conditions, flip that pattern.
   If soldiers move from their small frontline groups only when they become very sick, the system shifts the most infectious opportunities toward the deadliest strains. Those soldiers travel to hospitals, trains and cities at the point when they carry the highest viral load.
   This rewards strains that cause severe illness, since those are the ones that enter the wider network and spread further.
