Motability cuts BMW and Mercedes – this reform is just the tip of the iceberg

  1. Disability benefits claimants will [no longer be allowed to access luxury cars such as BMWs, Audis and Mercedes](https://inews.co.uk/news/cars-still-available-motability-scheme-luxury-models-cut-4040173?ico=in-line_link) on the Motability scheme.

Motability Operations, the company which runs the scheme, has announced that it will stop leasing these high-end models “immediately”.

It follows pressure from the Labour Government to [end the luxury options](https://inews.co.uk/news/worked-dwp-four-ways-motability-scheme-change-4027759?ico=in-line_link), with opposition parties calling the range of cars an “absolute scandal”.

[Chancellor Rachel Reeves](https://inews.co.uk/topic/rachel-reeves?ico=in-line_link) was concerned about the fairness of offering a “premium motoring experience” that most working families cannot afford.

Motability Operations has also agreed with the Government to commit to making 50 per cent of cars available through the scheme British-built by 2035.

The pre-Budget changes take the pressure off Motability – which leases cars to disabled people in exchange for monthly benefits money – at least for now.

It follows months of controversy over the types of cars available, the generosity of the scheme and [huge growth in numbers signing up](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/why-motability-changes-push-up-car-prices-everyone-4048332?ico=in-line_link).

  2. Should also plaster them in advertisements that the government gets the keep the proceeds from. They should be the most basic of vehicles that still meet the needs of the person they are given to, they are a tool, not a luxury item.

  3. Everyone should get the cheapest MG EV and be happy with it.

  4. I would have kinda expected there to be like 2 different basic models and that was it.

  5. I know of a woman who has a Mercedes on this disability scheme and she’s not disabled. She has an austistic child but the mother drives the car every day as her get to work vehicle.

I couldn’t believe it when she boasted about the government paying for her to have a Mercedes under the scheme, but it’s crazy but true.

  6. I agree we shouldn’t be giving disabled people these kinds of cars, mainly because they’re shit and unreliable and disabled people deserve better.

  7. My mother was a lifelong wheelchair user and I seem to remember a Mercedes people carrier/van being in the ballpark of the other vehicles we looked at at the time. Hyundai/Ford/Vauxhall etc.

  8. Labour need to take an Axe to dozens of ‘taking the piss’ schemes

  9. I interviewed with motability…I said…I’m attracted cause its not for profit. The interviewer reaplied: in reality this is the most commercial company I’ve worked for. Its all about targets and sales.

  10. Why is this based on brand not price, how is it this fucking stupid? VW own Bentley let’s get out with rebadge gun chaps.

  11. I actually dont mind this change.

People who need the mobility lease can still have it (something redditors seem to prefer to take away from them entirely).

A narrower range of car options isn’t a big deal at all.

Making them british cars is perfectly fine in theory and I actually dont know why this isn’t already a thing. Sounds like a good idea.

My only issue is…. do we even make any cars anymore? I’m not sure disabled people should be driving around in Caterhams.

  12. Go back to those little blue cars, it’s ridiculous how people get tax payer subsidised cars.

  13. My dad had a motability car that his carer used to drive him around in once a week. They also used it to bring groceries etc every few days.

He had dementia and mum needed a break/respite every now and again. Neither ever learned to drive.

He had a basic Vauxhall Mokka.

Why am I just finding out now that people are taking the piss in Merc’s and BMW’s? The Vauxhall did us just fine, why do people need these premium cars?

  14. So you saying I can’t get a BMW because of my tennis elbow?

  15. I have a motability car and I didn’t understand higher brand cars being on there but the amount of people here that think the government pay for the whole lease is bonkers and shows they don’t know how it works. They pay the motability part of PIP and thats all, I paid the rest of the lease out of my own money.

  16. Motability should be restricted to buying reliant robin’s.
