Paul Murphy TD calls for ‘not-for-profit’ taxi app from NTA to fight ‘Uberisation’ of sector

  1. You mean people having a transparent idea of what they will actually cost with flat fares?

  2. Let them have an app for booking but also allow proper Uber and let the people decide which they’d rather use. Simple.

Mandatory: Paul Murphy isn’t a serious person.

  3. Now, hear me out – how about we invest into a 24h public transport system instead, reducing the reliance on taxis to fill the gap?

I don’t need to grab a taxi if I can get a bus home from the pub. I don’t need a taxi if I can go to the doctor on a train. And I don’t need a taxi if I can reach the airport on a metro.

  4. So Uber are giving a price guarantee or lower on fares.
how is this bad for the public?

  5. in the thread: The public disagree with a government owned…. taxi booking app…. because actually, paying service fees to american big businesses is class….

  6. The costs to build and maintain and manage long term might be more headline grabbing than an expensive bike shed.

Even then, they will have to find a development partner who will be private and contracted.

Not sure if this has legs tbh with the government or general appetite.

Also not sure we’re going to see any step in deregulating of the taxi service.

So we would just have a state owned app compete with private for what aim?

  7. Uber spends a coupe of billion every year in R&D and then probably another couple of billion maintaining the app.

Is Paul Murphy calling for the NTA to get €3-4 billion a year for the next few years to develop this app?

  8. Drivers pay is already regulated by the taxi regulator so Uber and Free now are forced to make their margins via other means

  9. If drivers are against it, they can just not sign up to it, leaving the end user with no taxis to book, on this app in particular? (or any app for that matter)

    Or am I missing something?

  10. We already have this. It is called TFI Anseo. Taxi’s hate it.

PBP always behind the curve as usual.

  11. We spent millions on the COVID contract tracing app that looked like something from a Transition Year student project. And now Comrade Murphy thinks we could create something to beat Uber? The lad just spouts any sihte that comes into his mind.

  12. Tell me, why should we have to heed a man who got elected on the 11th and final count in his constituency?

A party with 3% support from the last Red C poll?

  13. It’s mad, they could just not sign up to Uber if they have a problem with it? 😂

  14. Hey, for once I agree with Paul.

Problem is that the NTA have proven themselves continually to be really, really, shit at technology. Especially apps.

  15. I couldn’t give 2 shits about the taxi drivers. If it were me in charge, I’d open the whole market up and let Uber go fully Uber. Getting charge 40 quid for a 12km journey. They can get fucked

  16. What a waste of money this would be which should focus on affordable/reliable public transport

  17. So essentially have the NTA… And as a result the taxpayers foot the bill for the technology used so we can use an app to get a taxi?

What about the feedback mechanisms for taxi drivers, for when we have a dodgy one acting the maggot or canceling jobs. Is the NTA now to assume a direct role in management of what is essentially a series of sole traders?

  18. A taxi group is free at any time to fund and build their own application. They could even run it as a cooperative. The government has given enough protection to the industry as it is. If they don’t like what uber is offering they are free to come up with something else or go back to call centers.

  19. This is a great idea. Uber or free now are driving prices up for consumers and squeezing taxi drivers. The same as just eat with restaurants. An unnecessary middle man although both ideas are great but they are predatory.

  20. Usual lefties answer let’s keep things bad for the consumer.

  21. Any taxi driver who uses Uber is a turkey voting for Christmas.

  22. So non taxi going people have to pay huge money for an app they will never use ? It’ll be a shit show of an app anyway.
