Israeli army fires top commanders over October 7 failures • FRANCE 24 English

They had served as the Israeli army’s heads of intel, operations, and southern command. Now they’re among several senior military personnel to be officially dismissed over the failure to prevent Hamas’s October 7 attacks. The dismissals, though, are largely symbolic, as the generals had already resigned from active service. The 2023 assault, which killed about 1,200 people, is widely considered Israel’s biggest intelligence and military failure. IDF Chief Al Zamir noted the systemic failure to protect Israelis. It is not easy to make decisions that affect people I respect and who have dedicated their lives to the security of the country, people I have fought alongside for decades. Zamir also announced disciplinary actions against several officers. It comes after a report into the failings of October 7 was published earlier this month which was conducted by a committee of experts appointed by Zamir. Meanwhile, there’s mounting public pressure for the government to be held accountable over the shortfalls. On Saturday, thousands protested in Tel Aviv to demand an independent state commission of inquiry. It should be an objective uh committee. Uh it should be a committee who will really find out how come that uh we had such a a failure, such a crisis. I have friends who were murdered on October 7th, and until now, nothing has been done to investigate or to prevent such a disaster from ever happening again. The government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has so far refused to form an independent commission. Last week, it voted to launch its own self-mandated inquiry. Critics say this will only look to downplay the government’s responsibility.

Israel’s military chief dismissed several senior officers and reprimanded others over failures during Hamas’ surprise attack on October 7, 2023, which killed around 1,200 Israelis and left 250 hostages. Former heads of intelligence, operations, and southern command were released from reserve duty, while others faced formal reprimands or ended their service.
