Having militarily neutral states like Ireland and Switzerland, which are small countries and smack in the middle of the EU, is a good thing. No one would dare invade them, and having neutrality is useful in resolving future conflicts through diplomacy.
When you are not tied to a military alliance, your diplomatic standing carries more weight, IMO. This is, of course, just my anecdotal view on things.
IT IS NOT NECESSARY FOR IRELAND TO JOIN NATO SINCE ITS GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION IS VERY SATE (*away from Russia*)
btw I can’t wait to see Spain becomes a neutral country like Ireland.
I think we should remain non-aligned but our Defence Forces should be brought up to modern standards. As it stands, we cant defend our own airspace because we lack the RADAR and fighter aircraft needed to track and intercept intruders. We currently rely on the RAF to protect us.
Our Navy is laughable small and struggles to crew ships due to a lack of manpower. For a nation with such a large EEZ we can’t even begin to patrol or protect it.
Isn’t the whole point of Irish neutrality kin to what being wanted by Russia for Ukraine now? Ireland was seen a gate for the Spanish, French and Germans to invade Britain so it kept under the English yoke. As now the threat is gone, sure, why not.
But then, does Ireland needs to be part of such alliances at all?

Why? We get on with pretty much every one.
