Slow drivers making roads ‘very dangerous’

  1. So we are going to take tractors travelling at 60km/h off our motorways?

  2. Yes because if you go too slow you’re forcing people behind you to overtake

  3. Ragebait shite from Newstalk.
Next up, complaints about cyclists not wearing hi Viz….

  4. Jack Lynch tunnel , 80 km/hr is 30-40 max at rush hour for no reason, its free flow.

  5. There is a substantial cohort of drivers who always go 20kmh under the speed limit. This is the same group who slow down a further 10kmh when there’s a speed camera van

  6. Conor Faughnan complaining to Pat Kenny about slow drivers, now that’s peak Newstalk!

  7. I’m probably one of those. I have to drive slow at night as I’m blinded with those superbright headlights.

  8. If you are uncomfortable drinking near the speed limit on primary roads with a 100km limit, then at least pull over and let people pass you… Sick of sitting in a string of traffic on a good road doing 60,

Then theres the people doing 60 until you attempt to over take them and suddenly their foot starts working again.

And my favourite is those who drive at 70, on the motorway its 70, 100 zone, its 70, 80 zone its 70, 50 zone its 70…..

  9. ‘..you have a person who is very diffident, very nervous and is going along at 60km/ph, they might say in their own head, ‘I’m driving legally, I’m below the speed limit.’

But the build up behind them, it may be the fault of the eejit who does take the risk, but you’re creating a circumstance where somebody behind you will take the risk’

I don’t know where to start with this Daily Express level of propaganda.

He’s blaming person A for person B becoming impatient. ‘He was winding me up talking shite behind me in the pub so I laid him out. His fault’ 🤷‍♂️

Traffic happens and it’s up to you to weigh up the risks and to drive safely. You can’t say you took a risk and broke the speed limit, lost patience, but it’s not your fault because somebody person A made you do it.

This is absolute bullshit, it’s not even research. It’s the opinion of a guy who reads the traffic on the radio. ‘Traffic expert’, whose daily contribution is that it’s busy at the Red Cow and Dunkettle Interchange.🙄

Only Newstalk would actually think that this is passable as news. Somebody at Newstalk is probably sick of sitting in traffic and had this opinion, went and asked Conor Faughnan if he agreed, then wrote this down.

  10. Finally. I was waiting for the news related to turtle drivers.

But the number one reason why they are dangerous is… The majority of them are distracted – on their phone. Not nervous. That’s why they are driving slow in the first place.

  11. And the ones who drive half in the lane half in the hard shoulder because they want to go 20km under the speed limit. Sorry, if you’re not able to make progress and keep up with traffic get off the road

  12. Was behind a blue fiesta this morning from Mallow to Cork, 45kmph on a 100 road. Fully loaded trucks overtaking it.

    Total madness

  13. Doing 80 in a 120, hogging the fast line. L or N plate up. Windows fogged up to the gills. Big stupid head in charge of the wheel.

The inside lane is the new fast lane.

  14. Someone driving 20kph over the speed limit is very dangerous. Someone texting while driving is very dangerous.

Someone driving 20kph under the speed limit is not ‘very dangerous’.

Speed is by far the biggest danger on the roads

E: To all the young drivers downvoting me, I encourage you to link me some fatal accidents involving slow drivers

  15. Wait until you hear about the 45mph maximum speed limit up north for new drivers for a year, even on motorways

  16. Literally no stats to back it up.

It’s gas how many people will take this, what’s basically an opinion on Newstalk, as some sort of truth now because it confirms their own feeling on it.

Edit: the up and downvoting on this thread is wild

  17. Been saying this for years. They are a danger on the road and will not pull over for drivers to overtake. Oblivious to everything around them until you try and overtake and they speed up!

  18. I was stuck on the road behind an ancient woman for about 30 minutes last month. That Same route usually takes 9 to 10 minutes. Madness.

  19. I’m sorry, but his logic is that someone behind will drive dangerously to compensate. It’s fairly weak logic.

    Slow drivers are annoying

If you are behind the wheel of a car and you are triggered into fury by a slow driver, u need to reflect on that.

    1. No matter where you are, there will be slow drivers. You might as well get angry every time u see a red car
    2. Some people have shitty old person reflexes. It’s their job to drive to their ability. You can’t force all old people off roads. With the demographics, it will get worse.

A car is a dangerous thing
If you are getting stressed and angry driving, you are just a weak minded emotional dufus. Accept that the world is full of slow drivers and bad drivers and good drivers who occasional make a bad mistake. Then chill out and you’ll enjoy driving more and be safer.

  20. We nearly got taken off the road this weekend by a car slowly merging onto the road. From what I see its mainly older drivers who drive dangerously slow.

  21. What is going on recently? 3 crashes in Drogheda alone this morning.

  22. Just had this tonight! Old man doing 25km in a 60 zone where I couldn’t overtake, we then get to the roundabout and I had a feeling he would do something stupid. He was in the left lane and I’m in the right.

He decides to cut in front of me while we’re going around the roundabout.

  23. It’s shocking how many slow drivers there are on the motorway in the passing lane. Either not paying attention to their speed or just oblivious to how motorway driving is supposed to work.
    Zipper merge? Forget it.

The worst part is that they all think they are driving more safe, 80 in a 120 for example. Someone gets up to them, brakes, person behind them brakes, person behind them brakes hard, then they get hit from behind.
The dangerous slow driver continues on their merry way, completely unaware of the damage in their wake.

Motorway driving should be part of the road test.

  24. JFC to all those people saying slow drivers are ‘making’ you do dangerous things on the road , thanks for outing yourselves, please surrender your license to the nearest Garda station before you kill someone

  25. The denial in some of these comments is outrageous. Look at the recent reports of road traffic deaths, sometimes incidents with multiple fatalities. These were all down to excess speed. I have never heard of an incident where too little speed caused more than an inconvenience. There can be slow drivers, cyclists, horses and pedestrians on the road and drivers have to look out for them all. It is the responsibility of all drivers to ensure that they drive within their abilities and within the restrictions placed by road conditions and other road users. Slow drivers are not dangerous drivers.

  26. These oul wans think 60 KPH is the same as 60 MPH, they are scared witless at the thought of penalty points and won’t risk getting them

  27. The worst are the dipshits that don’t speed up on the slips onto the motorway. You can’t merge at 50km/h when everyone else is doing 100

  28. Think the worst slow drivers are rubber neckers. How sad and pathetic must your life be to slow to a crawl to stare at a broken down car or a crash?
Those people should sell their cars and get a bus ticket if they want to gawk out the window.

  29. The state of the roads in my area theres no way you could do the speed limit. Potholes seem to appear over night .

  30. This is just nonsense bluster to get headline.

I’m a fast enough driver, and slow drivers irritate the hell out of me, but there are precious few scenarios where they can be blamed for someone else making a dangerous overtake.

The fact is, the RSA don’t have a breeze as to the causes of collision – that goes for speeding at well as slow drivers. I’ve actually requested information from them and they claim not to have it. *That* is the real issue here – because we can never address road deaths if we don’t understand the root cause.

  31. Yeah, start with fucking tractors on fucking motorways.

  32. I drive the N13 and N15 as part of my commute to work. Outside of the stretch of road between the Letterkenny/Convoy/Ballybofey junction and the run down to Ballybofey which should arguably be brought down to 80kph since it’s winding with poor sight lines and no hard shoulders, there is next to no excuse for a competent driver to not be able to safely drive the 100kph limit that is on the majority of that route.

If you insist on driving slow then pull over regularly to let the train past, or give enough space for people to pass safely when there’s a clear stretch of road. Causing a train during morning or evening rush hour, especially when driving conditions are good is the absolute height of ignorance. End of the day we expect tractors to pull over when safe to do so, the same expectation should be put on other slow traffic.

  33. Pricks who do 50kmh on a slip road to a motorway do my fucking head. Without fail everyday on the m7 I always get stuck behind one, and have to try and merge going 60-70 while everyone else is at least 100

  34. as are fast ones. also distracted ones, angry ones, sleepy ones, drunk ones, ones having a seizure or sneezing fit, ones with dementia….truly, cars are a scourge.

  35. Yeah every piece of data you can find shows that speed is the main cause of fatal accidents

  36. Some people should never be allowed drive. There are way too many people with driving licenses on our roads who shouldn’t even have a bus pass. It’s strange, I think there is this understanding that anyone can drive and should be allowed to drive but it’s simply not the case. You hear stories of people failing their tests multiple times and being on the road and people have a laugh and a joke about it but in reality that person probably has no business operating a car on the road and is a danger to everyone when they go out with their car. Also, let’s not forget about the time the driving tests got so backed up thousands of people got their licence without actually sitting a test, they are still out there..🤣

  37. Drive at the limit, turn on your lights and get off your fucking phone.
