Authorities say they’re not suspects—but they are concerned about their health.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office is asking for help identifying two juveniles seen running from a pair of petroleum storage tanks that exploded and burned for hours Wednesday afternoon.
The children are not considered suspects, officials said, but authorities are concerned about their health after video released Wednesday night appears to show the two running through a retention area near the burning tanks. In the footage, one child stops twice to splash water on his face at a drainage outlet before both run out of view.
The fire began around 2 p.m. near Richey Road and Veterans Memorial. Emergency radio traffic captured during the incident included a report from a deputy relaying that workers on site believed a child may have been on top of one of the tanks when it exploded.
“Workers here on scene are saying there’s a small child… on top when the thing exploded,” the deputy told a dispatcher, according to 911 recordings. “He may have been thrown from it.”
Investigators say they hope parents of the children in the video will come forward to ensure they receive medical attention. Officials would also like to speak with the juveniles to understand what they were doing near the site, though it remains unclear whether they had any connection to the ignition of the fire. Anyone with information was asked to call the Harris County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 713-221-6000.
Across the street, residents felt the force of the blast.
“I heard a big boom, didn’t know where it came from,” said Janie Martinez, who lives directly across from the tanks. “I thought my sister was upstairs and… may have fallen, because my house shook.”
Martinez recorded video of the fire from her backyard as flames shot from the tops of the tanks. Fire crews used foam to extinguish the blaze, and the fire was officially declared out just before 4:30 p.m.
The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office said Wednesday evening that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials again urged the juveniles seen in the video to seek medical evaluations if they have not already.
