So 10.8 in reality
Just the same amount expected to be collect by taxing pension contributions.
No one voted for this.
What a colossal waste of money.
I work in tech and there is no way this should cost £1.8billion.
It could easily be done for tens of millions if that.
What are they doing, building their own data centre…
You wonder how much has already been spent on consultations etc.
Yeah but they had to haggle
> Rachel Reeves referred to Digital ID, which will become mandatory for right-to-work checks by the end of the decade
Can she stop with this nonsense, how is this so much easier and incredibly expensive compared to the current system of either having a UK passport/Permit or a share code… All of which exist without shitting £1.8 billion up the wall.
The extraction economy continues to extract I see
A reminder that the last ID card scheme was projected to cost over £20bn and honestly this seems more complicated.
Way to prove there’s more undercover shit – it doesn’t cost 1.8b for software and a database… the amount of development cost is comparable to something like GTA 6 and the amount of work is miles apart.
>set to cost a staggering £1.8billion
Yet practically nobody wants it.
I really cant understand how this is justified. The reasons they gave about it being about immigration is obviously bs. Then when we consider how they’re always banging on about a black hole in the budget. And have now raised taxes which is fine but if part of the tax raise is to pay for this digital id that nobody wants then I think serious questions need to be answered.
They will go to one of their big suppliers who will piss money away. A friend of mine got an IT contract job with Siemens, working on some now-failed NHS project. He quit after 3 months as he was just told to sit in an office with 100’s of others doing nothing as the project was late. The taxpayer picked all that up
£1.8bn today, double that before implementation, plus whatever ongoing multimillion annual costs to be able to use it.
# “Digital ID card scheme set to cost a staggering £1.8billion, before it gets cancelled again (Previous wasted cost £4.6bn)”
Fixed the headline.
A66 – all over again.
Not required.
Will be astonishing over budget
The tax pay sheep will foot the bill
This is what it starts at. Knowing the UK this should be at least £248 billion in 15 years when it’s functional
I hear the opposition parties voicing disapproval. I want to hear them condemning it unconditionally. Nobody voted for this.
So £5 billion after all the delays and “unexpected” cost overruns happen.
Let me guess Palantirs will end up with our data. Fcuk sake
Can’t fund the military or NHS, can fund this somebody make it make sense
Follow the money..this shouldn’t cost that much and it will end up costing double if not more..certain people are set to profit greatly off of this..
Reform will just bin it anyway.
Guaranteed Tony Blair’s son is involved in this Scam , Probably the reason he got a MBE also
Oh perfect! I really hope it helps decimate my pittance xoxo
Ahh finally, what everyone who voted Labour wanted
I can do it for 1.7
It’s not digital ID, that’s the front. It’ll turn into something far worse that encourages further on our rights and liberties.
And will change absolutely nothing. Labour everybody 👍
When it gets hacked it’ll cost a lot more!
Why don’t governments learn a lesson and *stop trying to digitise everything*. They’re rubbish at software, and it’s bad relying on this stuff all working anyway, especially for vital services.
Only in the UK. Any other country could do that for a fraction of the money.
Love it. Noone asked for it. It’s not needed for our daily lives. The excuse of right to work is bull. We already have a national insurance number and photo ID. If an employer wants to higher illegal workers, it’s cash in hand and not on the books. They don’t exist.
But what it will do, is allow the government to track everything you do. You’ll need your digital id to be able to travel abroad, move house, hell, even to access the internet. Those that laugh and say “but that won’t happen”. Why wouldn’t it? Why wouldn’t the government do that? It’s happened in other countries. It still does. Do you want the UK to be a mass surveillance state? Never underestimate the lengths governments will go to control their people. It may not be right away, but if they keep pushing and pushing, with noone pushing back, then they will carry on, until you can’t access your bank account if the government believes the words you post on social media is against their ideology.
Not a chance will it end up costing *only* 1.8 billion, just like nobody will be held accountable for the final amount closer to 30 billion.
So stupid
What is currently happening that we need this? What gap does this fill?
Forcing a nation to have digital IDs at a minimum cost of £1.8b (likely a lot more) to solve what?
Will it save money? Stop tax avoidance? How? Genuinely cant get my head around this.
Might just build it myself and sell it to the government for £180 million. Your welcome.
I love how we’re supposedly super in debt and have a black hole with X amount of money missing, yet we can afford 1.8billion to pay for a scheme that nobody wants or asked for.
