Former Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus KC has been given a special advocacy role to advance Australia’s human rights leadership on the international stage.
As the new International Human Rights Envoy, the Australian MP will call for the abolition of the death penalty, as well as for the rights and protections of children, older persons, people living with a disability and LGBTIQ+ individuals.
Dreyfus’ role as a senior minister shifted in the second-term Albanese government, when a factional deal about who to appoint to the frontbench saw him dropped from cabinet earlier this year.
