TYLER, Texas — East Texans burned some calories at the annual Tyler Turkey Trot on Thursday morning before the big Thanksgiving meal.

This was the 23rd annual trot, and the course started and concluded at Racquet and Jog off of S. Broadway Ave.

“Just doing it with the kids is fun,” Megan Johnson, one of the runners, said. “It’s fun to get to do it together as a family.”

Mason Trimble’s family has been taking part in the turkey trot for years. He crossed the finish line in this year’s race wearing his Forrest Gump costume, complete with Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. hat.

“I just started wearing this (costume) around the races in Tyler,” he said. “It just became a hit, and I had lots of people asking for photos.”

Thursday’s turkey trot was for all ages and skill levels.

“I’m actually super thankful to have something like this to do,” Trimble said. “We just get out here and have a good time. All these people are so nice.”

While Trimble is a turkey trot veteran, other participants like Joselyn Arroyo were taking the course for the very first time.

“I felt accomplished (after the race),” she said. “Just knowing that I was able to do it and complete it is (rewarding).”

Everyone who crossed the finish line on Thursday received a medal.
