Denmark sets up night watch so Trump doesn’t seize Greenland while they sleep • FRANCE 24 English

Turning now to one of our top stories, the death of a National Guards woman after this week’s shooting in Washington. It’s dominating the opinion pages of the US papers and Deept Colon is here to take us through it. Deep, what are the papers saying? Well, it comes, of course, after Allison Donald Trump’s announcement on Thursday that of the death of Sarah Beckmrom. Uh the 20-year-old uh National Guardswoman died of her injuries after she and a fellow Guardsman were uh the victims of a shooting in Washington on Wednesday. The other Guardsman is currently fighting for his life. Uh the perpetrator is believed to be an Afghan national uh who worked with the CIA. This is uh uh here as you can see dominating the front of the uh Wall Street Journal. In the wake of this, Donald Trump’s administration has paused immigration from Afghanistan. The president blaming his predecessor Joe Biden for uh the shooting, saying the alleged shooter came amid the US’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan uh four years ago for the Washington Post. In this article here, the uh Biden’s team indeed failed to prepare for the fall of Kabul in 2021. This inevitably, it says, brought uh quote dangerous people into the US. However, the post says that these people uh threatening the status of all 77,000 Afghan refugees who have made America their home is a a morally bankrupt decision. Uh and the Post reminds us that they put their lives and the lives of their families at risk to help the US during its two decade war in Afghanistan. Now, from the New York Times, the editors here uh call it a uniquely American heartbreak of yet another tragedy, reminding us that this follows in uh what has been a very politically violent year in the US. The paper reminding us of the death deaths of Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband killed in June. Uh more recently, the death of Charlie Kirk, the conservative political activist. Uh however, the Times says Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard, while quote un outrageous, is not to blame for the shooting. What people should be condemning rather is the rise of political violence in America. And uh just to wrap this section up, you have the National Review. This is a conservative uh magazine which says it’s not just a tragedy or it’s more than a trag tragedy, it’s a quote atrocity. the paper really blaming uh pointing the finger at Joe Biden’s uh withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and Congress’s leth lethargy, saying it would have been far less likely to occur uh without uh the without these key decisions. That attack definitely overshadowing the Thanksgiving holiday in the US. Uh deep. Coming to an article this time from British Daily, The Guardian. They’re reporting that Denmark has set up what they’re calling a night watch to ensure that Donald Trump’s uh declarations and movements don’t don’t involve Greenland. Yeah. Basically, Denmark wants to make sure that he doesn’t try and seize Greenland while they’re sleeping. This is a Game of Thrones style nightw watch set up by the Danish foreign ministry as reported by this Danish daily here politic this week. Uh the idea being, as you said, to ensure that they are on top of all things Donald Trump, especially when it comes to his unpredictable statements, possibly actions on uh Greenland. Now, The Guardian explains that this night watch will be set up from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. daily. Uh and the Danish government and its departments will be briefed about Donald Trump’s actions and statements, particularly on Greenland during this period. It was, it sounds a bit whimsical, but it was actually implemented after Denmark’s uh diplomatic row with Donald Trump this year, earlier this year because especially when he threatened to take control of Greenland, according to one defense analyst cited by the Guardian. Uh the US Danish alliance is well and truly dead, at least under the Trump administration. Doesn’t sound quite as exciting as the game. Not at all, but less dangerous. Um, all right. Finally, from Udep D. Here in France, a town is trying to fight back against France’s image as being rude to tourists. Indeed, the Britany town of Samri has set up this novel experiment this week, uh, daring its locals to stop complaining for a day, for an hour, a day, a week even. Uh, moreover, they’re engaged uh, they’re they’ve been encouraged to engage in something the French are not really known for, polite conversation. Uh locals uh authorities have even given them some helpful talking points like uh you could dis discuss whether putting pineapple on a pizza is a crime against humanity or a culinary treat Allison or you could discuss another talking point why it is that socks often go missing when you put them in the washing machine. Uh the idea being to transform Samri into what uh the Times says could be the French capital of courtesy. Uh, and for good reason because a 2023 survey found that um 68% of French people agreed that uh they’re very rude. Leon Marles and Paris topped that list, but not Samri. Not Samri. Well, maybe maybe it’ll spread. Maybe they’ll they enjoy the Maybe there’ll be a contagion of nicities. Small talk revolution here in France. You heard it here first. All right, Deep. Thank you so much as always for that look through the papers. That’s our press reviewer, Deeptika Don.
