Insurance company asked me to supply a copy of my v5. A few days later and I've received this…
I selected all the details for my car based on the registration through their website, so I don't understand how verifying it on the v5 has meant an extra £90 on the premium.
Are they taking me for a fool?

Ask them what has changed to justify the increase?
With 1st central myself, requested additional info after setting everything up and increased my price for a different reason
Charged me £42 for changing the address in my insurance and £25 of that was an admin fee
The did it with me regarding the job I’d put down. What I put down was technically correct but incredibly vague. I knew that when I put my details in, just wasn’t expecting them to call for more info! Ended up costing an extra £120 for the year but they still would have been the cheapest so not too worried
I was with them last year 10 years NCD, standard basic car, 55 per month. It jumped this year to 110, I cancelled and moved. Insurers have really stuck the boot in past 18 months, Dick Turpin atleast wore a mask.
They asked for information from me when I moved to them recently. Didn’t change anything though.
It’s normal for 1st central specifically. Nobody else regularly does this.
you have grounds to ask them why, although im not sure they are actually obligated to tell you. i think your consumer rights should allow you to cancel your policy without penalty though, but not sure. worth contacting citizens advice perhaps?
Wait to see what it is. As much as you may feel robbed, it is essential that the insurance actually covers you.
Ask for the administration fee to be waived if lack of options on their website caused an error.
When i was looking around compare sites 1st Central was the cheapest so I just looked them up and there was a few reviews of dodgy shit like this. Always asking for additional information then bumping up the price after buying there insurance. I stayed clear
Same but they offer a free replacement key with my insurance and unfortunately I dropped mine and claimed one soon after they did this…
That’s the joys of the cheapest option on the comparison sites
They did something like this to me.
All because the wording on the site says
“When was the car purchased”
Which I stated correctly.
The car is my mother’s and was transferred over in my name after the fact.
Then when I sent them the v5. The date on the v5 is the transfer date, not the purchase date, but they don’t seem to care they’re using incorrect wording.
They’re indeed chancers.
Trying to charge stupid amounts of money over something caused by their incorrect wording
It will be because your date of purchase is off by a few days vs what it says on the v5.
The cheek to ask you to pay £50 to change the policy they decided needed changed which is also costing you money.
I’m with them for 2 years, no issues.
Don’t have car insurance but I had a similar issue with my home insurance at the start of this year when I signed up with OneProtect and had declared no claims in the past 5 years. I knew that insurers shared information etc and had no issue with that. I had a broken XBox that I had rung my previous insurance firm about at some point in the year previous, but, after talking to the guy at the call centre I said something along the lines of ‘before I actually go ahead with this I’m going to go back to the retailer/manufacturer because I probably should have done that first’. It really was just an exploratory call because I wasn’t sure of the process I should be following and to be honest my cognitive function seems impaired quite often.
OneProtect then used this as an excuse to double their quote and amended my direct debit, I complained to them, they didn’t give a fuck and I was in a bad place mentally and left it too long to challenge things properly.
Fuck insurance companies, there are very few that actually try to be honest.
Been driving for 10 years and more our less change my insurer every year. 1st Central are the biggest fucking crooks going was with them a month and they wanted to charge me a fortune AND cancel my insurance which makes it very hard to get reinsured because when I first got insured I said I was a courier and when they randomly rang me to confirm my details I said I was a delivery driver got an email a week later telling me about the cancellation etc because I lied about my profession.
My advice to anyone reading this is to stay far far away, sorry you are involved with them.
Make a complaint. They’re a financial services company, “I’d like to make an official complaint” are the magic words.
If nothing has actually changed from your application, then the mistake is at their end and you shouldn’t be charged the amendment fee. The higher premium might be valid, just based on them having input the wrong data at the beginning.
Avoid this crowd! Shower of crooks. Customer service operating from india and dont have a clue
Offer a cheap price online then ramp it up after taking it out claiming data issue. Common practice from them and unfortunately not illegal.
Sounds like you didn’t declare something that you should have, and now you’re pissed off that you’re being charged to rectify your lie.
I guess it’s reasonable if there’s sense to it but super unethical of them not to explain what the change to the policy is. I would also complain about the £50 charge because they’re essentially updating their own info on that reg, likely something you don’t know about! But ask to see what it is, if there was no way you’d have known about whatever it is then make a complaint. If it’s something major like engine size then they could argue that you should know that.
1st Central are the worst
