Belgium’s federal government wants to use funds from dormant bank accounts to balance its 2026 budget.

The deadlines for recovering these assets would be shortened from 30 days to 10 days in order to quickly mobilise almost €500 million from dormant accounts, De Tijd reports.

The revenues would come in particular from an accelerated seizure of dormant money. Finance minister Jan Jambon (N-VA) wants to reduce the limitation period to 10 years for missing beneficiaries and five years for inactive accounts.

Since 2008, a law has required banks to transfer dormant assets to the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations (CDC). Currently, €815 million in dormant money is held there, spread across 674,961 accounts and contracts.

  1. I’ve always found it strange that I cannot find my old bank accounts on the myminfin website.

Now I know the government just takes it away.

  2. These kind of stuff is crazy, life is becoming increasingly more like a game.

  3. Now they’ve resorted to just straight up taking money from our personal bank accounts

  4. Yeah… When I am short on rent,… I look for pennies in the sofa each month too…

  5. The circlejerk can stop now. It’s as if every commenter here doesn’t really understand what this is about.

These are inactive accounts. Forgotten, abandoned.
They are just sitting there, serving no purpose.
Isn’t it better to use those funds? Would you prefer they tax us another 800 million instead?

  6. Does anyone know when an account is viewed as dormant? The article doesn’t explain

  7. I don’t really have any issue with this. These are dormant accounts where the owner can’t be identified or found. Better to use it than let it rot on a bank account.

  8. Soon the government will take everything you don’t consume immediately.

  9. Just got a letter in our mailbox from the bank addressed to the previous owner about their investments. He was 95 when he sold us the house 15 years ago..

  10. For anyone saying this is theft: if after this you do pop up and ask for your money: the governement pays it back.

So yeah I rather have this then more taxes or more cutting somewhere else
