Cost of living crisis: immediate support from Sunak a ‘moral imperative’ – CBI | Cost of living crisis

  1. >‘moral imperative’

Extremely embarrassing for the government, and a kicking of Sunak.

These are strong words not to be underestimated. And from the CBI of all places

    >Danker said it was “unacceptable” that people were faced with the choice of whether to heat their homes or eat.

Danker my old fruit, that is the Tory way.

The Opposition really need to start using that phrase ‘heat or eat’ it’s kinda catchy and soon will be associated with the Tory party… could even be put on billboards and form part of any electoral campaigning… it’s a killa phrase.

  2. They can’t do anything now because they know it’s going to get much worse in the winter. We’re on our own folks.

  3. I can’t help but wonder if come winter we’ll see real ‘civil disobedience’ in the UK… when someone is choosing between heating or food for their family it’s sure going to feel like the social contract is broken; so why abide by it :/

longer term, this could end up being a new ‘Thatcher moment’, people are going to remember a government that didn’t help them in a time of crisis, perhaps making a tory vote unconscionable (brexit was that moment for me personally but obviously that’s not going to be the case for everyone)

even for older generations, the tory mainstay, inflation is going to hit hard… their savings are suddenly worth less as everything becomes more expensive… anecdotally, so far my tory parents are just blaming things on global influences (which, to be fair, is probably largely true) but surely at some point they have to worry a little about the direction the UK is heading

all in all, probably not going to be a pleasant time being a tory politician for the next few months, if only schadenfreude could heat a home :p

  4. Firstly, just a quick nitpick at the Guardian’s assumed knowledge of what the CBI is (it doesn’t give the full wording or an explanation anywhere in the article, as it really should) – it’s a big business lobby group.

Secondly, appealing to the morality of a creature like Sunak who slashed UC, saddled every current household and every future household with extra inescapable debt on our energy bills for the next five years and introduced the concept of government -subsidised superspreader events seems like a hiding to nothing.
