  35. I highly recommend everyone reading this find a copy of the film “The Revolution will not be Televised” – which covered a CIA backed coup d’etat attempted against Hugo Chavez. During Chavez earlier years, the CIA worked with oil and business interests in Venezuela after the country nationalized oil production (similar to Operation AJAX in Iran) to launch the coup to attempt to take control for oil profiteers.

    However coincidentally there was an embedded film crew doing a documentary on Chavez at the same time the coup was initiated. It shows an incredible amount of detail about how the media in the US lied, selectively showed and edited footage to foment US support of the coup. Essentially for almost every US and Venezuelan private media broadcast during the coup, the news crew was able to show what was *actually* happening, directly contradicting the newscasts and their reporting.

    Ultimately the people of Caracas and the surrounding area rose back up and crushed the coup themselves.
