The Estonian Ministry of Defence has received a new batch of K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers manufactured by the South Korean company Hanwha. The delivery is part of the country’s ongoing effort to expand and modernize its artillery capabilities. In an official statement released on X, the Ministry noted: “The newly arrived K9 ‘Thunder’ howitzers reflect our long-term commitment to readiness, resilience, and cooperation. Estonia invests in security because our freedom deserves to be defended.”
This delivery continues the acquisition process launched in 2020, when the first units of the initial contract arrived in the country. That agreement included 24 K9 Thunder self-propelled artillery vehicles, at a total cost of €81.5 million financed over four years. In addition to the systems themselves, the package included instructor training, maintenance personnel training, tools, and spare parts. A clause allowing for the purchase of an additional 12 vehicles was later activated, bringing the total fleet to 36 units.

The purchase of the latest batch is part of the increased defence spending pursued by Estonia and other European countries following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. As part of this effort, Tallinn is also moving forward with the acquisition of six M142 HIMARS systems, along with GMLRS rockets and M57 ATACMS tactical missiles. The operation, approved by the U.S. Department of State, is estimated to be worth $500 million.
In parallel, the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments signed a framework agreement with local company Go Craft 24 for the modification and maintenance of the K9 Thunder. The contract covers the installation of communication and command systems, painting work, electrical system upgrades, replacement of the fire suppression system, and other adjustments needed for full integration into the Estonian Defence Forces.

Defence cooperation between Estonia and South Korea continues to expand. The two governments recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that could pave the way for a future purchase of the K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher system developed by Hanwha Aerospace. The document was signed in Seoul by Defence Ministers Ahn Gyu-back and Hanno Pevkur during ADEX 2025. Although no quantities or timelines have been disclosed, the MoU lays the groundwork for a potential new acquisition, following the industrial cooperation model that South Korea maintains with European countries such as Poland.
With these additions, Estonia continues to strengthen its artillery capabilities and expand strategic cooperation with South Korea in the defense sector.
