Iceland vs Great Britain Preview

Iceland’s national team, which failed to make a strong impression at the previous EuroBasket after finishing the tournament in the group stage without a single win, looked much better at the start of this qualifying cycle. Considering they are in a very difficult group featuring Great Britain, Lithuania, and Italy, the 81-76 road win against Italy in the opening round is of huge importance for the rest of the competition.

Despite entering the game as complete underdogs, Iceland played extremely well, controlled most of the matchup, and held the lead for long stretches before ultimately securing a big and meaningful victory. Italy was ahead 76-74 with just over a minute remaining, but the Icelanders responded with a 7-0 run fueled by Elvar Fridriksson, who scored all seven points and completed the comeback. Fridriksson was also the standout performer of the game, finishing with 29 points, along with five assists and three rebounds. The only other double-digit scorer was Tryggvi Hlinason, who added 16 points. What’s promising for Iceland is that they still have room to improve, especially with Martin Hermannsson expected to deliver more after scoring just six points on 2-for-10 shooting. He will be counted on to play significantly better against Great Britain.

As for Great Britain, they also competed at EuroBasket this summer and likewise exited the tournament in the group stage. However, they left a somewhat better impression by managing to record one win, against Montenegro. They also looked strong in the first round of the qualifiers, but suffered a heartbreaking 89-88 home loss to Lithuania in a stunning finish.

Great Britain seemed to be on the verge of a big win after Akwasi Yeboah scored with 15 seconds left to give them an 87-80 lead, and it looked like only a miracle could stop them from taking the victory. That miracle came in the form of Ignas Sargiunas, who knocked down three incredible three-pointers in a row, punishing Myles Hesson’s missed free throw and then a costly British turnover to secure a crucial win for Lithuania. The top scorers for Great Britain were Carl Wheatle and the aforementioned Myles Hesson with 18 points each, followed by Akwasi Yeboah with 15. What will be crucial for the British side now is to quickly recover mentally from this shocking loss and prepare for a challenging road game in Iceland.

Where to Watch Iceland vs Great Britain?

Iceland vs Great Britain Best Betting Tip and Prediction

Iceland delivered an excellent performance in the opening round of this qualifying cycle, and their road win over Italy was a major step toward advancing to the next phase. Now they are expected to confirm that strong play in the matchup against Great Britain, a team arriving with shaken confidence after a shocking home loss to Lithuania in the first round. We expect Iceland to take advantage of that and secure a home victory by a margin larger than the given handicap.
