Advent in Zagreb officially began last night with the lighting of the first candle on the large Advent wreath at Manduševac, marking the start of this year’s festive season in the Croatian capital.

The ceremony was led by the Mayor of Zagreb, Tomislav Tomašević, who used the occasion to remind citizens of the true spirit of Advent.

“In this pre-Christmas period, I invite you not to forget those around us who may be lonely or on their own. Let us give them the most valuable things we possess, our time and our attention, and in doing so bring joy to their holidays,” the mayor said.

The event was officiated by Monsignor Zlatko Koren, canon of the Archdiocese of Zagreb, while guests included the Minister of Tourism and Sport, Tonči Glavina, and the Director of the Zagreb Tourist Board, Martina Bienenfeld.

Following the ceremony, Mayor Tomašević toured the city’s main Advent locations.

This year’s Advent once again brings a rich cultural and musical offering across the city.

Traditional hotspots such as Ban Jelačić Square, European Square, Kvatrić, Zrinjevac, Strossmayer Square and King Tomislav Square are joined once more by the Humanitarian High School Advent at Kennedy Square, adding a meaningful charitable note to the festivities.
