The Belarusian Ministry of Health has clarified the procedure for adding a blood type mark to citizens’ documents following the publication of Resolution No. 192 of 14 November 2025. The document sets out the rules for recording blood types under the ABO and Rh systems, as well as the format of the mark and the registration log used in healthcare institutions.
The ministry stressed that the voluntary nature of this mark remains unchanged: a blood type stamp may be added to a passport or residence permit solely at the citizen’s request.
“The document retains the provision that a blood type stamp may be added to a passport or residence permit only at the citizen’s request. However, it is important to note that the mark is not added to the identification card of a citizen of the Republic of Belarus, diplomatic, service or biometric passports, nor to other documents intended for leaving or entering the Republic of Belarus,” the ministry said.
The Health Ministry recalled that the practice of voluntarily adding a blood type mark has existed for more than 40 years, and the new version of the resolution does not change its nature — the information is general reference data for the citizen.
The ministry also specified that in medical practice, the presence of such a mark has no practical importance: before any blood transfusion, the patient’s blood type is determined anew each time.
With the entry into force of Resolution No. 192, the Ministry of Health’s document No. 118 of 10 July 2008, which regulated the previous procedure for adding marks, has been declared invalid.
