Better to drill down in the North Sea and hope, that build a cheap wind turbine on a hill near a Tory voter.
I produce “natural gas”, can I get some investment?
They wouldn’t need to do this if they attached the Tory party to a dynamo, the constant U-turns would generate free energy for the country.
This is a global trend that’s happening at the behest of the oil and gas industry.
Many will notice that natural gas has been touted as the successor to oil and coal, due to its generation capabilities. And while it is far more efficient than renewables, its polluting profile is far more intensive than oil.
Nearly all oil and gas companies I’ve come across have shifted their portfolios to increase their share of gas production. It’s an industry initiative that we can see has been successfully introduced by government.
That being said, North Sea gas has lower emissions profiles than most other basins.
It’s worth noting that throughout its history the U.K. owned North Sea gas fields have been so abysmally managed by the state that only around 5p in every £ of profit made by fossil fuel companies is reinvested back into the U.K. economy.
This is due to the sheer number of tax breaks, subsidies and incentives we give to the companies.
Conversely Norwegian gas fields and industry is state owned, which meant that around 86p in the £ was reinvested into the Norwegian economy.
In fact, there have been several years where the U.K. government has made a net **loss** on North Sea gas and oil.
In 2015/16, Norwegian government made £29bn in revenue from its North Sea fields. The U.K. made -£23m despite producing MORE gas and oil.
They don’t want North Sea gas and oil because WE need it. They want it because their rich mates need it.
Trying to label fossil fuels as ‘green’ is pretty much the most stupid thing I’ve ever heard!
and I always thought it was purple 🙁
The only green natural gas there is comes flowing out his mouth when he speaks.
War is peace.
Freedom is slavery.
Fossil fuels are green.
Boris Johnson is a competent adult.
There were no parties.
Tory party donations come from completely legitimate sources.
Ignorance is strength.
Lol. Really?
I’m not a lefty or much of an environmentalist, but this is beyond stupid.
The reality of power generation is that we can’t recycle solar panels or turbine blades in a sustainable way at the current time and we can’t build the capacity quickly enough in terms of generation either.
That means we need nuclear to bridge both gaps.
Unfortunately doing that will take years, so we’re stuck with what we have for now, but the priority must be nuclear.
Just pretending that older dirtier fuel types are now somehow green just doesn’t make it so.
Can’t be bothered to invest in green energy sources? Lie. It’ll look better on the reports when global warming hits another record high this year. At least we’ll be able to point to our document of made up numbers and go “look, we invested more in green energy this year!”
It makes a lot of sense on a personal level for wealthy right wings the world over, I expect. If their home is rendered uninhabitable by climate change, they can afford to move to one of the handful of places which are still habitable.
Something, something moving goalposts…
If politicians were not so fucking dangerous, their pronouncements would be comedy gold.

Every conservative is a cunt. No exceptions.
Conservatives are a cancer on humanity.
Sounds pretty similar to the Australian government’s plan for a [“gas lead recovery”](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/sep/17/scott-morrisons-gas-led-recovery-what-is-it-and-will-it-really-make-energy-cheaper).
