  2. I remember my Nan saying you could see the smoke from the other side of London. Such a terrible shame.

  3. Just looked at this place online and the shear size of this thing was insane. Hard to imagine

  4. My mum told me stories that my grandfather could see the glow of this fire from Mile End.

  6. What inside made it burn so furiously? Crystal Palace was basically a glass structure with steel frame. Not flammable on its own.

    Was it packed full of timber or something?

    Edit: just googled and the heat came from the large area of wooden flooring combined with wind that fanned the flames

  7. It was the anniversary today. Inside the transmitter a before and after aerial photograph on the wall shows the devastation.

  8. My grandad and his mate saw the smoke and walked from Bankside to Sydenham following it, when they were turned back by the police. He was 10.
