“Türkiye can now cover almost half of its natural gas needs in the form of LNG via ships,” said Türkiye’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, adding that the LNG capacity is sufficient to meet the full amount of household needs, even during the coldest winter days when consumption peaks, at an average of 330 million cubic meters (mcm) per day.
The country can receive LNG through five facilities, two of which are onshore LNG terminals and three are Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs). LNG regasification capacity, which was 34 million cubic meters per day in 2016 when the National Energy and Mining Policy was implemented, has now increased to 161 million cubic meters per day, a fivefold rise.
In addition to gasification capacity, the number of entry points in the gas network was also expanded to 14, raising the total daily gas intake capacity to 495 million cubic meters.
The country is diversifying source countries and supply routes, and also produces gas from domestic sources. As the Minister highlighted, Türkiye can import LNG from anywhere in the world, gaining cost advantages.
