    We’d twat Russia in a 1 on 1 war. It doesn’t mean anything that they’re a billion times bigger geographically.

  2. This has been continuously true since the 1960s. It’s important to remember that we haven’t had a time in 60 years this hasn’t been our lived reality. The UK government might have been clinically insane publishing “protect and survive” in 1980 but the popular view at the time was the advise was unlikely to work: few doubted the risk existed to justify the booklet being passed out.

    Mutually assured destruction has been east-west policy across those decades. Neither side seriously repudiated first strike and there were persisting rumours the EEC governments had issued instructions to seize land borne nuclear weapons if they were not included in a trigger warning under a hot war.

    Basically, “yawn” -now, show me documented evidence of a raise in threat level: opening of land ICBM lids, heightened submarine activity, withdraw of the ambassadors.
