True size and latitude of Poland vs North America

  1. Why aren’t Chicago and New Britain Green?

Edit for auto correct being weird af.

  2. Spent some time in Montreal 2 years back. The winter was way harsher than here in Bialystok. Looked at the latitudes, was surprised.

  3. I would like to say that Russia is also very big…

  4. Poland’s area is very similar to that of New Mexico.

  5. So the main question is: if Poland were the Saskatchewan of Europe, is it better than Florida of Europe?

  6. And still almost the same population as Canada

  7. One thing that surprised us is some people in Europe don’t want to travel because they can’t stand taking more than 2 hours to go somewhere. This was the opinion of a nice German fellow we met at a pierogi making class in Warsaw. I suppose with Europe being so compact, any trip over an hour must feel like a really long time for somebody who grew up here. Do you feel like that? Or was it just his opinion?

For us in Canada, the minimum time driving to any place interesting is 4 hours. We do not have a good passenger train network like in Europe. Flying is prohibitively expensive as well. For example, to fly about 450km to the next city, the cost is typically from $400+ CAD (1300 PLN+) _per person_. Just to go ‘next door’. In Europe we can fly almost across the continent for maybe $200 for both people, or take a train for even less.

So taking a couple of hours to go to a completely different country is a real treat when you’re used to really crappy transportation options.

  8. “Those savage winters we have in Canada”

    You posers!

  9. Damn so the 5 hour journey from Warsaw I took to the lake district is like a small part of Cali still.

  10. there is no chance Poland is around the same size as Texas, i refuse to believe that

  11. The Mercator projection is quite well know for being very inaccurate when it comes to size. This map makes both Canada and Poland look far bigger then they actually are when compared to the US.

Territories at high altitudes appear bigger and territories closer to the equator appear smaller.

    [Mercator projection wiki.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercator_projection)

  12. Yeah but why use Mercator to show size? This true size map sucks bc Mexico smol

  13. Crazy bit is Canada there has roughly the same population

  14. One things that make me laugh is that Polish people say that Poland is not a cold country

It is one of the coldest countries on the planet – most ppl in Canada and Greenland (and UK) live south of Poland’s latitude, we’re def in top 10

  15. It’s little late to comment, but one must be mad to compare sizes on the Mercator projection.
