  1. The guy who does the eyes was doing a balaclava mural that day.

  2. >During the conflict our women played an important role supporting out prisoners while also keeping the family unit together

There is something vaguely misogynistic about that the women are the ones confined to the kitchen doing the cooking.

  3. Played an important role in heart disease by the looks of that food

  4. I’d say that the % of loyalist prisoners with domestic violence convictions would rival that of those partaking in the “defend our women” rallies

  5. So the story behind that particular mural (as I understand it) is this shows blind members of the local community helping make meals during the Belfast Blitz in WW2, at least that’s what I was told.

The fact it’s another mural where loyalists don’t have to paint eyes is purely accidental, I’m sure.

  6. *As far back as I can remember I always wanted to be a baker*…

  7. Yep, if you look at any loyalist muriel, including every one at the ironically named, “freedom corner” as pictured above – they are all wearing sunglasses because they literally can’t paint eyeballs.

  8. ‘Them sausages ain’t what they used to be Margaret. I couldn’t read the label down the co what with these glasses being super glued to my face.’

‘I know Maureen, but sure what can we do? What with all the rackets, all the good shaps have closed down. We had a good butchers too, but sure they said he was f—-n and burnt him out. I couldn’t tell if he was or not’

‘Too much talk, your holding me back from baking imaginery scones on this counter here. What’s that you got in your hawn their Yvonne?’

‘I don’t know Margaret, that’s the God’s honest truth. I just know in times ahead the people of East Belfast will remember us for supportin’ the prisoners while keeping the family unit togeller.’

  9. Apparently that supporting role was a Van Morrison tribute act.

  10. When you need an unhealthy sectarian breakfast during a total solar eclipse…

  11. They seem to be inspired or copying the Republican narrative. They always did.

  12. Everyone in those murals are wearing sunglasses. I think it was just a way to get round painting eyes. Eyes are notoriously tricky and can go wrong so fast.

  13. U just know they got abused by the loyalists husbands.

  14. That is a south facing Pratestant gable wall, these wimen get blinded by the sun half an hrrrr a week and need the shades. Nat da mention, they are also facing the south of Ireland, and the glasses save their god fearin eyes from that papist shite. Also, they look cool as fuck.

  15. “Teaching Granny to suck eggs” a concept piece that tests the boundaries of what ppl can get away with on a community arts grant application form.

  16. The sunglasses? To like proteck ler identitties like.
Seriously though, why are these women sorting out cocks and balls?

  17. I think it’s a great mural, it’s taken from a photo in the 1970’s, & the ladies are playing their part during the Workers Strike.

Gangster grannies, just can’t help yourself eh

  18. It’s intended as a little tableau meant to show blind women pitching into the war effort during the Second World War.. baking, cooking, rustling up all the comforting stuff that kept the respective communities backbone vaguely un-jellied.

    Kinda Sweet and touching, really.

  19. I still have no fucking idea what those ladies are making. Can someone explain what I’m missing here? What’s the story with this mural?
