NATO Official: Putin Is Bluffing About Readiness for War With Europe

5. He is, and he is not. Putin cannot have peace, because the day the war is on pause, the Russian economy and society begin to collapse.

7. There is a story (not sure whether true or not) that Putin was present in Berlin in 1991 as the Wall fell. After the Stasi HQ was stormed (not soon enough to capture most of the files, but still) the KGB office was next, and he was charged with looking serious in front while everyone else carried secret documents through the back entrance. Supposedly he said to the crowd that the building is full of armed soldiers and they would shoot everyone who crossed the line of the gate. In reality there were a handful of clerks and maybe one pistol among them which was never shot with. But his successful bluff caused a sufficient delay to secret away all the stuff that we all would very much like to have a glimpse of.

   Simply put, if the guy can do something well, it’s bluffing. He doesn’t recognise when someone else bluffs and when not, though, and thinks that everyone else is bluffing too.

17. So which one is it? Is Russia invading NATO soon because NATOs not ready or are they posturing and not actually a threat to NATO because they’re prepared? Seems this news outlet and other media can’t keep their story straight.

    He’s not bluffing in the sense that, just like Zelensky, he commands a mobilised army that will and does fight, but most of Europe will not.

    Ultimately, neither Europe or Russia is ready for war in Europe. And both Putin and European leaders know this.

20. I want to believe that few needed that insight at this stage, and recognize Putin’s lack of understanding.

    He genuinely thought Russia was ready to take Ukraine. I don’t think anyone could argue that the dictator sent forces to attack Ukraine while also considering the possibility that they weren’t ready.

    He had no doubts whatsoever and how wrong was he? This is something that I’ve not heard or read in discussion. If Putin could overestimate Russians strength this badly, what else has he been getting wrong and covering up?

    It stands to reason that Putin doesn’t have a fucking clue, never has, and all the things that appear to be his successes were destined by any Russian leader.

    The fact he has been allowed to hold power is proof of how cancerous Russia is and why they could never succeed against Western armies that fight for a fair chance of self determination.

22. Europe should call his bluff and give him 30 days to remove all his military from Ukraine. If he fails, NATO (with or without the US) should begin removing them for him, dead or alive.

    We’ve seen what they’ve been able to do in Ukraine or not do.

    We know how bad the economy is right now.

    There is no world in which they could actually fight without any nuclear weapons Europe let alone the US

26. No shit… NATO could have air supremacy in under 20 days, over all of the Russian Federation assuming China stays out (probably within 10 days)
