This year, approximately 6 kilometres of fence remain to be built along the Latvian-Russian border in swampy areas and hard-to-reach places. The fence is planned to be fully completed by the end of 2025, according to the State Real Estate (VNĪ).
The total length of the Latvian-Russian border is 283.6 kilometres (km).
At the end of last year, under the leadership of VNĪ, the construction of the Latvian-Russian border fence was completed in priority sections (approximately 250 km, including the 99 km previously constructed by SIA Igate) and began construction of the fence in swampy areas and hard-to-reach places (approximately 28.35 km), construction of pontoon roads with a total length of 15 km, as well as rectification of deficiencies found in the fence constructed under the supervision of VNĪ in the previous period.
In accordance with the priorities set by the State Border Guard and the government’s decision this year, VNĪ has begun the final stage of construction of the infrastructure necessary for the protection of the state’s external land border in the priority sections of the State Border Guard along the Latvian-Russian border, approximately 41.26 km in length.
Nine contracts have been concluded with three construction companies – VAS “Latvijas Autoceļu uzturētājs”, the association of persons “Ramda C-MIKOR” and SIA “Citrus Solutions” , with whom, as a result of an open price survey, VNĪ concluded contracts for a total amount of EUR 17.9 million including value added tax (VAT).
The design work is scheduled to be completed in spring 2026, in accordance with the approved timetable. The construction work is planned to be completed by the end of 2026, with some sections of less than 12 km to be completed by the end of 2027. Design work is currently underway on nine sections.
The construction of the state external land border fence on the Latvian-Belarusian border, led by VNĪ, was completed in July 2024, covering a total length of just under 145 km. Currently, under the leadership of VNĪ, the final works are continuing on the construction of the necessary infrastructure on the Latvian-Belarusian border in the Daugava section, where no border fence is planned. These sections are planned to be completed by spring 2026.
