The spirit of Christmas swept over the Reykjavík City Theatre yesterday when students from the dance school
Óskandi
performed the classic ballet The Nutcracker.
A total of 150 students, aged 8
to 18, participated in this year’s production.
This is the fifth time
Óskandi
has staged The Nutcracker on the main stage, making it a true Christmas tradition, much like those upheld by many professional ballet companies abroad.
In
Óskandi’s
version of The Nutcracker, the story begins at a Christmas party where Uncle
Drosselmeyer
, a magical clockmaker and toymaker, arrives as a guest. He gives his goddaughter, Clara, a nutcracker who is under a spell but comes to life after Clara defeats the Mouse King in battle.
Clara and the Nutcracker then travel into an enchanted forest where angels and snowflakes dance. Next, they enter the Kingdom of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes them, and a grand celebration is held in their honor. There, all kinds of treats dance for them
— gingerbread cookies, marzipan, caramels, candy canes, chocolate, and finally
,
the flower princesses.
