I live in a very small town in Fenlands, Cambridgeshire, l moved here from London 4 years ago to be with my partner, and while l appreciate lm an outsider with very liberal views and henceforth a minority here, with all that in mind, l get extremely upset seeing things like these.

As a person who has both interests and education in multidisciplinary humanities, l can appreciate why phenomenoa like this exists, l understand that people in smaller towns feel betrayed, forgotten and abandoned due to lack of founding, limited access to jobs and education and as a result of the above they tend to divert their frustrations towards immigration being the easiest target, and someone to blame for their hardships and misfortunes.

I understand how easy it is to manipulate an angry and frustrated group of people and bend them into any shape required by the powers above, but even with all that in mind, l am terrified because in here- this little town in Fenlands, the hatred, the racism and the rise of far right is spreading like an unstoppable wildfire.

People here are having racist rants in the shops, cafes, bank ques, high street, doctors waiting rooms. Business proudly pledge their allegiance to the likes of Stephen Yaxley- Lennon, Reform and anyone that preaches racist hatred by displaying flags, slogans and posters with racist rethoric and no one is even remotely ashamed of it either, on the contrary.

I'm observing it all somewhat with disbelief and oftentimes in sheer horror. It really breaks my spirit and l quite often don't know how to react to it anymore. It makes me feel hopeless.

  7. Unfortunately, Reform and Farage are busy normalising racism by claiming that all the racists that keep turning up in their party aren’t doing anything that bad really. Farage’s comment about ‘not directly’ being racist is a perfect example.

    Racists should be reminded at every opportunity that its not acceptable.

  8. It’s the lack of any kind of perspective that’s scary, not necessarily the political views in themselves, which are frequently pretty stupid. Like, under no circumstances would any normal, sociable person look at Tommy Robinson and go “yeah, that guy seems pretty moderate.” You’d have to be colossally detached from reality to think that.

    What’s tragic is that that kind of sheltered lack of perspective is what leads these people to be hurt over and over, and think that they’re being persecuted, when really they’re just smacking themselves in the head over and over because they can’t adapt to anything.

Literally the richest man in the world, Elon Musk, has been flooding cash into support for Tommy Robinson, and even appearing on a video screen to call for violence at the recent Unite the Kingdom march where guys in England capes perched on the lions at Trafalgar Square. One way to protest this is to join your local Tesla Takedown UK boycott group. Recently we were credited in the press with preventing Musk from opening a Tesla showroom on Oxford Street.

  28. I was watching BBC footage of one of the protests and there was some absolute spanner wearing a ‘I’m not far right, but I’ve just been RIGHT so far’ t-shirt. (Or something like that).

    Sadly, I can see more people sharing these views as there are very few immigration success stories shown in the media, the sort of thing I mean is ‘this is x, he came here 6 years ago and was in temporary accommodation for 5 years before his application was approved, during that time he survived with just the basics and spent his days learning, in the last 12 months since his status was settled, he now runs a small business employing 3 people and has moved in to his own flat’.

    Can we have some positive stories please.

    Saw people put up cheap Saltire flags on lampposts. On the community Facebook they said that since Scotland were playing Greece at the time, it was a “happy coincidence”. Cue the “stop the boats” posts with Union Jacks. Asinine.

  33. It’s a dangerous time. We flirt ever closer to doing things that we will find shaming for generations. I don’t know how we pull back out of this but one thing I know 100% is that the policies of the likes of Reform are both a gateway drug to this kind of shite, and that they don’t have one single policy that will actually make ANYTHING any better. On that basis I’d prefer we moved our collective hand away from the hot water tap – but I also sort of think nothing is going to stop this detour into stupidity. In what way are the people of Fenlands ‘feelin it’ to the extent they think this is what they want? My guess is it’s more based on whipped up fear than anything that’s actually going on there.

  34. I’m 44 and I’ve seen the extreme right wing rise and fall a few times in my life but never got a foothold. This time it does worry me. Where I live in Essex, you can go down quite a few main roads and some idiot will have put a St. George flag on literally every lamppost. It scares me tbh because, as in the US and Trump, they’ve been emotionally hooked by the likes of Robinson and Farage and as any con artist knows, once you’ve hooked someone emotionally you can blatantly lie to them, cheat them, steal from them and they’ll blindly accept it and even go to extreme lengths themselves to support the narrative long after their intelligence has told them it’s wrong.

  37. In response to the OP. They had just as much access to education as I and many others did and we don’t all go around worshipping Tommy Robinson. . Please know that if people think racist thoughts, hateful stuff etc. It’s because they are fully reflecting their innermost selves. . I feel the same way about Brexit. We’re always being told that people were lied to. Yes they were, but there were also people saying it would be the disaster it turned out to be. They chose not to listen. We all heard the same stuff, but we didn’t all vote to leave. They chose the side with the most hate because they actually thrive being hateful. Let’s fully acknowledge what we have here.
