Watchdog urged to step in as UK’s poorest turn off energy supply

  1. Prepayment is an amazing scam to get around a lot of supposed protections. An energy company is not supposed to be allowed to cut you off without assessing the impact it might have on you and your vulnerability etc…unless it’s not actually cut you off, just stopped supplying you because you cant afford to pay up front.

  2. Say you spend 10 a day on energy (not an unreasonable sum).

10 x 30 = 300 and with UC at 320 for a single person you have 20 quid a month to survive on.

wtf – I can see some massive fucking issues coming up.

  3. If you use gas only for heating can you ask your energy supplier to cut you off in the summer so you don’t have to pay the standing charge?

  4. Good thing I saw this. I already shut down the furnace and switched things over to AC /summertime mode. It is supposed to get down to low 50’s F. So had to put up window coverings again. I have been practicing self disconnect for years. Still have to pay fees on a $2 gas summertime usage bill. The fee is $22. Average electric is 240 kwh usage.

  5. The government doesn’t care. It ruled out a 1k limit for another rise, i think and the watchdog seems to be useless. Surely, the entire point of the watchdog is to prevent two massive rises within less then 3 months.

  6. God I hope the government doesn’t give the energy company a shed load of tax payers money to bring the energy bills down.

I’d rather they just tax them instead and use that to bring the bills down.
