Two million affected by Thailand floods • FRANCE 24 English

Death toll from severe flooding in Thailand has risen now to 33 as continued heavy rain hobbles some of the relief efforts there. That is Thailand puts its military in charge of tackling the devastating flood crisis as reinforcements are brought on board to evacuate thousands of people stranded on the roofs of their homes. A huge cargo plane’s even been flown in to try to help with those relief efforts. Well, let’s get more from our Asia correspondent Yan Kim in Broomi who joins us from there. Yan, first of all, just sum up for us what the impact of this has been. Right. I’ve been watching videos today showing waters higher than the roofs of cars streaming across roads in Thailand. That’s really a sense of what we’re seeing here. One of the border towns between Thailand and Malaysia reported the heaviest rainfall in 300 years. some 333 mm of water falling in just a single day. The death toll in Thailand rising to 33. But it’s not just that. Across the country, there are thought to be some 2 million people who are being impacted by these heavy rains. The problem there, of course, is that it’s difficult to get to them. Many of them have been shut off, have been cut off from relief services that have been trying to get through. And it’s not just Thailand. These rains have been impacting the wider region across Southeast Asia. In Vietnam, the death toll in the last week has risen to 98 and across the Indonesian archipelago after landslides and flooding. The death toll now stands at around 13. So Yan, what’s the response been then? How are the authorities trying to deal with this? Well, the Thai authorities have really ramped things up. We saw reports today of an aircraft carrier being sent into action essentially trying to assist with these relief efforts. On top of that, uh we had reports of 20 helicopters and some 200 boats also being used by the Thai military and authorities to get people out of hospitals that were left trapped or marooned by these high water levels. helicopters being used to try and take out the critically ill patients, get them into hospitals that are in safer territory. Uh, field kitchens are also being deployed that can create that can cook some 3,000 meals per day. This also being done by the Thai authorities. And we also hear reports that the aircraft carrier could turn into a floating field hospital should rains continue. At the moment, it looks like the rains are set to continue for the coming days. Dan, thanks very much. Yan Kim is in Ruby joining us there

Severe flooding in southern Thailand has killed 33 people and displaced tens of thousands, also affecting neighbouring Malaysia. A state of emergency has been declared in Songkhla province, where heavy rains have inundated Hat Yai and surrounding areas. In total, about two million people have been affected by the flooding. FRANCE 24’s correspondent in the region has more.
