Fortunately, users of German railways will benefit because Germany is a shareholder in all UK rail services.
Public transport is definitely overpriced in the UK.
I mean the RMT is constantly on strike for better wages
Gotta fund it somehow
What bothers me is that I made the same point on a UK sub around 4 years ago when I came back from Germany and got down voted to hell and back because it was the standard. Now that the middle class are feeling the pinch it becomes an issue.
Britains been on its arse for years, it’s just those who had a little bit extra in the bank didn’t care until they couldn’t judge those who didn’t anymore. That fare has been in place for at least a decade.
He’s definitely being shafted since it’s actually £9 for a ticket from Clapham junction to Gatwick.
It’s actively killing multiple generations of careers.
I own a car. I’d own a car anyway because I live in a large town with shit public transport.
I am commutable to a city via train, however. Where the job and salary prospects are – on paper – better.
Except the fares are £29 for a peak day return or £72.20 for a weekly pass, but most jobs I’d commute for are hybrid so it works out entirely fucking pointless for a weekly and extortion for a daily.
Or ~£277.30 a month, or, ~£2,888.00 a year. So I have about the same NET income and waste 2 hours a day for the pleasure.
So instead I work two towns over, where again, I could get the train were it even close to reasonable.
12 mile trip, main rail line, no changes; £29 per week (itself extortionate but still comically the price of a day to the city).
£30 of diesel gets me to work and back every single day for 2 weeks, longer if I work from home some days, gets me to my hobbies, friends, family and shopping, in a car I would own anyway.
Nationalise the lot ffs.
I mean, the train from BER to Mitte shouldn’t be 30 minutes, it should be like 20.
Went to Krakow a few years ago. Got the Train from the airport to the city, 40 minute journey, perfectly on time.
It was 14 Zlotys, equivilent to £2.70.
And I swear some of our rail companies are French and German owned or am I just talking out my ass?
Prepare to pay more taxes or have spending cut elsewhere then to pay for subsidies
Proper shafted!
It costs me 40 quid to get to work on public transport, and around 7 quid in the car
Also paying for public transport is optional in Germany
Privatisation. Gotta love it.
More than £1 a mile for me by train. My new bike pays itself off within the month, and the car is cheaper per mile. WTF is the message here to the British people?
We’ve got the world’s highest energy prices and someone has to pay for it. Thank our government.
I’ve pushed back on this before
The price of a ticket from Clapham to Gatwick is £9 not £20.
The ticket from the airport to the city in Berlin is subsidized.
A first class ticket from Clapham to Gatwick *is* £20, a first class ticket from the station to the city in Berlin is €37.
This is a bad comparison.
Aside from capitalism & government bad, does anyone know what the reason is for this
The hilarious thing is that German owned companies own some of the UK rail franchisies, so your £20 is probably subsidising the £3.70 in Berlin.
Nationalisation is underway, so Great British Railways, will solve everything.
This is what happens when you sell off entities that should be nationalised
Never go to Japan.
The railway is ridiculously efficient, clean and so cheap.
Just riding the yamanote line for a fortnight for a couple of hundred yen showed me just how utterly crap and overpriced our railways are
Why should the taxpayer subside working people who choose to commute via train? /S
And yet people will still say ‘BUT MUH LABOUR GOVERNMENT, IT’S NOT THEIR FAULT’. Kek.
Did you remember to validate your ticket though? 🤣
I wonder why he paid £20 and not the £12.60 the ticket from Clapham Junction to Gatwick costs?
Or £18.90 if you go first class.
Brits love to raw dog capitalism then complain about profits
Meanwhile giant lorries and oversized SUVs wrecking the road surface pay barely any road tax and we subsidise them.
I bought a return coach ride to Heathrow the other day which came to about the same price as my daily return train commute to Bristol (I live in Cardiff). How on earth does that make sense to anyone? Utter scam artists in charge of these train companies.
Imagine getting trounced by the German rail network.
The one known for being inefficient, grossly underfunded ,overly complicated, bottlenecking and being in dire need of overhaul and repair for most of its infrastructure.
If they can still make that mess work better than ours we are in trouble.
You can take the Piccadilly line to heathrow instead.
You got to thank Margret Thatcher , bojo, Nigel for the shit we are in now. Them and their piss down economics
Ask any German if they’d prefer cheap prices and DB service, or more expensive and UK trains service.
I went to Budapest in February and travelled around for pennies, even using Bolt (their Uber). We’re getting properly fucked in the UK, trains especially.
Just blame it on Brexit apparently thats responsible for everything from the dinosaurs going extinct to cancer.
