I’m English and I’ve lived in Scotland for 14 years. Scottish people have been nothing but friendly since I got here. It’s the government in England they don’t like, not the people… and I think most of the English would agree with them.
Refreshing to see the kind of indifference, was expecting a binfire. Interesting that several people seemed to find a detached “other countrymen” may have an issue or see the English as XYZ but not actually themselves or anyone they know. Which suggests any animosity or rivalry is some imagined/detached force.
I’d align with much what everyone else said, English people are fine or no different than Scots or any other nation really.
I’d have mentioned that it’s class that divides people these days and perhaps the Queen’s English style / establishment British Nationalist is representative of that elite class but then of course you have the <1% in all nationality/creed and at this stage it’s probably a stereotype more than anything.
In short, fuck the Tories and Farage. English are grand.
The English? Great cunts, proper laugh, some of the nicest folk you’ll meet.
Their Government? Actual cunts.
“the wee boy that died, what was his name again”
“Maradona”
They are neighbours eh? Get some alright ones and get some outrageous cunts.
I would like to think no one actually hates English people, and that the rivalry is a bit of harmless fun that all nations of proximity experience
Love the English, despise the government. Too many people don’t make that distinction and call us racist for it.
People are individuals and should be judged as such. If you dislike, hate, or love, a group of people based primarily on their nationality, ethnicity, sexuality or whatever then you’re a daft cunt.

Pretty sure you’ll find it’s the english government everyone hates …
Even the English hate their Government.
Everytime i see a politicians face .. i just want to ..
Smarmy smug fuckwits.
Nauseating, wee world mentality stuff this. Do people not get bored of comparing ourselves to England?
Whole world out there. Loads of interesting stuff happening day-to-day in Scotland. It’s honestly tedious to constantly hear folk try to frame things through this Scottish-English lens.
I know you’re just resharing content from another sub and it’s down to the person who made the video in the first place. But this type of stuff bores me senseless.
It’s like a sibling rivalry. Aye you might talk shite about them but anyone else tries and they’re getting a slap.
‘The English are so up themselves’. Not on reddit! It’s all why are we so shit.
Someone in Edinburgh suggesting other people are up themselves is peak comedy.
English are just the same as us.
The Welsh however…
Some of the British subs hate the Scottish with passion
This is a very true reflection of the feelings of Scottish people I would say. One thing that does get Scottish people’s backs up is the English football media who act like England should really be winning every football competition they enter, and if they go out in the semis that this is some sort of major injustice.
Oh, and stop calling us ‘mate’. We don’t like that.
English living in England, all this is fair.
I’ve noticed many of my kin have an issue where they sneer on anyone that stands out from the crowd, and an arrogance that stems from us generally being the ones others cater to with regards to language. I try to not allow myself to reach such lows as I have a love for cultures and diversity and believe we become stronger when we embrace and celebrate our differences collectively, then again maybe my being Autistic and Queer and having people throughout my life treat me as subhuman has instilled a sense of empathy that makes me immediately imagine myself in the shoes of a group the people around me tell me I should deride and poke fun at
funnily enough the only one I disagreed with was the man that that doesn’t understand his fellow Countrymen’s animosity, I strongly suspect that he has been treated so well by the English because he’s clearly trying to cover up his accent in favour of sounding English, so most English people would have assumed he was English with an obscure accent rather than Scottish
My mother was born in England so I don’t hate English people. I don’t like their press and born in 66, I do get a bit bored of every significant birthday being dominated by the English win in the world cup.
I don’t think the English are to blame for all our woes. We do a good job of doing that to ourselves. I wish they would get their politics together though and stop voting for self harm like Tory, Reform and Brexit. As the largest nation they usually get what they vote for and that is often to the detriment of the small nations in the UK. I must admit that some of the banter about Scots is only banter when they are challenged. Some of them do believe what they say. Luckily they are a minority.
I have had precisely one bad interaction with a Scottish person in the 8 or so years I’ve been up here.
It was from a large, red man who started a one-sided conversation with, “Us Brits need to stick together,” then got pissy when I said I wanted nothing to do with that shite.
I remember doing the nc500, frequented lots of places and people on the route
You couldn’t find a nicer bunch of hospitable people
That is actually heartwarming.
Shower of cunts who’s default settings is a empirical superiority complex.
They’re not too bad bit arrogant though.
I married one and my 3 kids are English 😁😁
Ah don’t hate the English. They’re just wankers. We are colonised by wankers. We can’t even pick a decent, vibrant, healthy culture to be colonised by. No. We’re ruled by effete arseholes. What does that make us?
> They’re so up themselves… they think they’re superior
My grandparents were anything but up themselves when they moved to rural Scotland in the ’50s. My gran used to invite tramps in for tea and food. She said they stank and were were filthy dirty but she literally invited them into her house. My grandfather taught at the local school and they were known and respected throughout the local area. Everywhere they went they used to stop and talk to people and they knew everybody’s names. They were highly involved in the local art scene and my gran was a longstanding member of the local Scottish country dancing and book clubs. They were anything but ‘up themselves’.
Edit to add: when my grandparents moved here they didn’t even have electricity or running water in the first place they lived!! My gran had to get water from the village pump! They both went to defend this country from literal Nazis. My gran was on a radar station combatting the Luftwaffe. What does that fat fuck know about that kind of hardship?
I’m English and I love the Scottish country and culture and it’s history but whoever is going to judge me because of past events or prejudge me then you’re automatically a first class cunt Scot or not.
The football pundit thing fuels it. 1966 and all that. Are we the only country in the world who have to watch our sports being broadcast by our closest rivals?
They’re the country to the south of us, that’s really it.
I like lots of English people. I don’t like Westminster and I don’t like their “culture”…especially that of southern England.
All cunts, mostly good cunts but the odd utter cunt 😁
Lived in the north east and south west and had no problems at all.
The UK government government though? That can go fuck itself with a cactus
When I was 12, I moved to Scotland from England and was relentlessly bullied at school for being English. I had spent many summers in Scotland previously since my Grandparents lived here for many years and didn’t have an issue but as soon as I was a permanent fixture it became a problem.
Even my own “friends” would bully me, make fun of my heritage and the fact I was British Chinese. I did everything I could to fit in but understood in the end that they were never going to be accepting of me.
Kids are fucking cruel. But their parents were even more cruel. I’ll never forget being called a “Chinky English Prick” by one of the parents of my so-called friends and several other adults laughing and jeering at it because that soon became the playground taunt after others heard the story.
So forgive me if I find it hard to believe that the entirety of Scottish people are fine with the English people and only hate the government (I also hate the government).
A lot of this just shows stereotyping. The two guys saying “the English are up themselves” also say “i know plenty of English people and they’re all great”. Funny, that. It’s like saying Asians are good at maths or Americans are stupid. Some are, some aren’t- being one doesn’t make you the other, and you’d probably not even make that connection unless you’d heard it elsewhere anyway. I grew up in north east Scotland and bullying at school for being English was a real thing. And where do the kids learn that? It’s handed down from their parents. It’s just good old fashioned prejudice.
I’ve got no personal issue with English people at all. Most English people I’ve met have been sound. But there’s also no getting away from the fact that Scotland has been treated pretty terribly by the English state throughout history, and that context does shape how a lot of folk feel today.
You only need to scratch the surface to find centuries of Scotland being dragged into decisions that benefitted London far more than they benefitted us. Things like the Acts of Union basically happening off the back of economic pressure, the clearances that were enabled under a British state framework, the suppression of Scots language and culture, the way Scotland was industrialised then left to rot when those industries collapsed, or the lovely tradition of Scotland being used as a testing ground for policies no one wanted in England. It all adds up.
It isn’t about blaming people who are alive now or saying every English person is responsible. It’s just acknowledging the reality that the relationship hasn’t exactly been balanced, and that history sticks around in the background even if day to day we all get on fine.
If anyone wants a light hearted, very readable take on just how chaotic and messy that whole history is, David Mitchell’s book Unruly is brilliant. It’s written like a comedy rant about British monarchs, but it actually gives a decent sense of how Scotland ended up on the receiving end of a lot of nonsense.
I’m Northern Irish and live in Edinburgh. I’ve also lived in the south of England for about 10+ years.
The English are mostly positive or neutral about the Scots, and don’t really give them much thought. They like visiting Scotland and the Scottish people.
The Scottish have a bit of a one sided rivalry with the English, they imagine that the English dislike them, when the reality is quite different. There is unfortunately a little bit of a victim mentality that creeps in, and gets used as an excuse for bigotry and aggression. I remember seeing a couple of English rugby supporters getting a kicking on Lothian road by some locals (not rugby supports) while they shouted anti-English slogans.
It the equivalent of asking the English what they think of the French and vice versa.
Not sure tbh I always had a vague dislike of the English but since living in multiple regions of England everyone is just interested about what it’s like up north and crack a joke about how I shouldn’t be cold. Never been disrespected for being Scottish.
Lot of things to be said about the English, but I’d like to highlight that their music is class.
But Edinburgh is England, why didnt they go to Scotland to ask that question?
