I don’t know the criteria for the ranking but a few things come to mind. Ireland has less public holidays, a (slightly) longer work week than some of those countries, sick pay is practically non-existent and maternity leave is really bad compared to other European countries – those factors would contribute to people working more, i.e. going to work when sick or going back to work sooner after having a child. I don’t know about overtime, is it more common here? Also, some countries (like France) have laws around reading emails out of office meaning it’s easier to switch off when finished work.
4 days weeks
That’s all I want.
Don’t mind doing 10-11 hours on the other days. Just give me 3 days off.
Kids, shit to fix, shopping, cleaning, etc etc
2 day weekend doesn’t work
Because some people waste hours commuting to and from work, for one.
Italy is number 1? Yeah… no. They get the most paid annual leave a year – if you can get a permanent full time contract. They have no minimum wage (I’ve met people working – legally – for €5 an hour or less) And no doll (they’ve introduced something kinda similar in the last few years but it’s weird).
If you have a good job, even better if you work in the family business, then yes it’s great. If you’re an average Joe, live with your parents till you’re 40 on €500 – €700 a month.
Personally I find commuting a total waste of time. And as immigrants who do not have any grandparents to mind the kids, a waste of money too. A problem that working from home easily solves. At least they are trying to pass a bill for that. Let us wait an see how it goes.
Finland didn’t make it? This makes no sense
Cause we all live in groundhog Day in Ireland, as much as we think we’re content . Were not. I grew up in the 80s my first recession in this fine country if ours.
But yet only my dad worked and my mam was the homemaker , but yet we survived.
Now modern day Ireland at a guess has at least 80% households with both parents working .
Between mortgages, fuel, utility bills ,childcare what’s left is a pittance.
Time spent with kids less and less , as both parents are worn out.
It just seems like we are all working to survive , no family time just the usual. School, work, childminder, pick up kids, make dinner , ready for bed and low and behold we do the same the next day and the next day.
Kids are missing out on so much because technology has replaced the parents as were either too tired to interact or not there.
I dread to think what’s ahead for our kids.
Maybe life is too good here so it’s unbalanced?
Actually maybe it’s because after paying their rent, people in other countries who made it to the list still have money to do stuff?
Or because people there don’t have to live in Sharing to afford rent so they actually have a private life? Seriously I know exactly how many times a day my housemate fucks her boyfriend…
Depends how you see it. Most Irish ppl I know in professions are actually obsessed with work, 12 hour days pretty common, and they dont mind it that much. I think the obsession with money is highly correlated.
Because alot of people seem to think working unpaid overtime while salaried is the norm. Joys of the heavy influence of multinationals and the declining union influence.
